You can take it to the bank: A constitutional amendment for a $15-an-hour minimum wage will be on the 2020 ballot in Florida.
A statewide telephone survey of Florida businesses, conducted in July and August 2017 by research firm CorCom Inc, concluded a $15-an-hour minimum wage would be an economic disaster for this state. Such an increase would cripple many of the state's small businesses.
Here's what the survey discovered:
Alarmingly, nearly one-third --30 percent -- (of businesses surveyed) say they may be forced to go out of business, with 18 percent very likely to close. They do not think they could absorb the increase or pass it along to their customers.
Many business owners and managers anticipate that increases will also hurt workers. Half or more will see operations scaled back and expect to cut employee hours (56 percent). About as many say they will have staff layoffs (50 percent). About one-third will likely look for technological alternatives (automation) to replace workers (33 percent) or hire more experienced workers (33 percent).
Consumers will feel the pinch too. Most businesses will likely increase prices (59 percent), especially those with tipped employees (75 percent), ones who operate in the hospitality industry (73 percent) or ones that are part of a franchise (64 percent).
The argument that it will be easier on businesses if the increases are phased in over time does not seem to hold up. Nearly half (49 percent) say they will be forced to make changes (price increases, layoffs, etc.) once the rates reach $11. When the rate reaches $15, two-thirds (68 percent) expect that they will be forced to respond.

The good news is that 60% of the voters have to approve before the amendment is adopted.
The bad news is this is Florida we’re talking about. Almost chose commie Gollum for govnah.
Florida will be very hard for Trump to carry in 2020.
They are trying to get recreational marijuana on the ballot too. These two things are going to really increase Democratic turnout.
Yes, our 60% threshold is great because it stops a lot of amendments from being implemented nilly willy. Still, this one is gonna be hard to stop.
Suggestions: Someone should just run ads with pics of all the empty retail spaces, moribund malls, dead downtowns all over NYS, especially Upstate.

The real minimum wage is zero when you can’t find a job.
John Morgan of the Morgan and Morgan Law Firm, the largest Personal Injury Law Firm in the country is behind this push for $15/hour. if this goes thru he stands to make even more money....if his firm sues someone for last wages, over a few years or someone’s lifetime that adds up to huge sums of money.....Think about it, someone making $10/hour versus someone making $15/hour which over time adds up to a lot of money when his firm is making anywhere from 33 to 40%....
Also, ask folks if the like to/need to eat out.
I can’t tell you hit many restaurants have closed after each rise in the minimum wage, especially the mom-and-pop shops. Even the chains get hit because they have to screw with their menus to cut costs.
Note to Florida: All this, too, can be yours if you vote to raise it.

It’s not amazing at all: the American people who repeatedly vote for hard-core liberals have never had an understanding of small-R republicanism and economic common sense.
The government does not have the right to set a maximum or minimum hourly pay rate. Asking the people if it’s OK doesn’t change that fact.
NYS’s is phased in, too. Hasn’t helped. And the fine print in ours, who raises it later, when should make every biz owner’s hair stand on end.
Does FL’s proposed law have any fine print for what happens after the MM hits $15...?
Not even after it bites them on the a$$.
Sigh.
If it passes...what you can predict are three curious consequences: (1) the unemployment will ‘tick’ up by 3 to 6 points in a matter of one quarter. (2) Any work that you can slice off to illegals (thus paying them $10 an hour) will be manufactured...meaning lesser income tax generated and no health care costs. (3) You will find a lot of five to ten employee small businesses laying folks off and the boss/wife will start to work 60 hours a week each...to make up for the lesser employees...but having serious health risks after a year of ‘double-duty’.
Many fast food places will go under even chain ones, they are not doing as well as they’d like people think, to many young managers who think working 80+ hrs a week is OK won’t be able to meet pay role and make a profit. Especially in rural areas. That is all we have. Mom and Pop sit down’s have been driven out of business. Our biggest employer is the Grocery store.
And the folks who will be hit hardest are the ones supporters say they are trying help.
Ain’t that a hoot.
They’ll be helped, all right. Right into the unemployment line, the welfare office.
I'd say impossible. 1/2 of FL is 3d world now.
