Another Pulitzer-winning cartoonist has been shown the door.
Steve Benson was laid off Wednesday by his longtime employer, the Arizona Republic, as part of larger cuts by the Gannett company. He had been at the paper nearly four decades, winning the Pulitzer in 1993 and being named a finalist for the prize four times.
The layoff represents the latest spasm of shrinking among staff editorial cartoonists — who numbered in the hundreds several decades ago, but now have dwindled to dozens.

I have met Steve Benson personally, he is possibly the biggest flaming @sshole punk I’ve ever met, no exaggeration.

I was wondering if he as one of those rare conservative cartoonists. But, no, the cartoon at the website is viciously anti-Trump.
40 years ago I used to take the Arizona Republic. Back then, Benson was reasonable. He worked both side of the political spectrum. Later on, Benson took a hard left. He was hard to stomach.
I suspect that Benson’s leftward tilt was the only reason the Washington Post notes his demise.

I’m glad he lost his job, I hope he’s embarrassed and experiences true financial hardship.

Gannett has wrecked every local newspaper in the country. It is an national disgrace; I hope they die a long and hard death.
So my memory that Benson was conservative, is faulty?

Steve Benson may have started out somewhat conservative, but if you google his cartoons, everything there is to the left.
If editorial cartoons are dying out, that's all to the good. They made politics more simpleminded than it had to be.
The night the Kenyan guy won his first election, Benson did a cartoon of Bonzo’s head sitting ABOVE and on top of the four other heads on Mt. Rushmore.
That was a long time ago, what has he done lately?
