Trump: Ending shutdown was ‘in no way a concession’

President Trump on Friday sought to defend his decision earlier that day to end the ongoing partial government shutdown without getting funding for his long-desired border wall.

“I wish people would read or listen to my words on the Border Wall. This was in no way a concession," Trump tweeted. "It was taking care of millions of people who were getting badly hurt by the Shutdown with the understanding that in 21 days, if no deal is done, it’s off to the races!”

I wish people would read or listen to my words on the Border Wall. This was in no way a concession. It was taking care of millions of people who were getting badly hurt by the Shutdown with the understanding that in 21 days, if no deal is done, it’s off to the races!

Trump's comments came hours after, bowing to mounting pressure, he announced that he would sign a short-term funding bill to reopen the government without funds to construct a wall along the southern border.

“I am very proud to announce today that we have reached a deal to end the shutdown and reopen the federal government,” Trump said.

Congress later on Friday easily advanced a three-week funding bill to fully reopen the federal government, hours after Trump agreed to end the shutdown.

Trump's announcement was met with criticism from some conservatives who claimed that Trump had caved amid the more than month-long fight over border wall funding. The government entered a partial shutdown on Dec. 22 amid an impasse between Trump and lawmakers over his demand for billions of dollars in border wall funding.

Trump had said he would not sign legislation that did not include $5.7 billion in funding for his proposed border wall.

“Good news for George Herbert Walker Bush: As of today, he is no longer the biggest wimp ever to serve as President of the United States,” conservative commentator Ann Coulter tweeted.

Trump warned Friday in announcing the three-week funding deal that if he cannot get a "fair deal" by next month the government could shut down again or he may declare a national emergency to sidestep Congress and build a border wall. Such a move would almost certainly draw legal challenges.

“We’ll work with the Democrats and negotiate, and if we can’t do that, then we’ll do a – obviously we’ll do the emergency because that’s what it is. It’s a national emergency,” Trump told reporters later in the Roosevelt Room of the White House.

Weird that defending the border would draw legal challenges while destroying Libya without a wardec didn’t.

Anyway this is much ado about nothing. We’re right back where we started in 3 weeks.

From what I just watched; the President gave a good part of the SOTU speech at 2:35 eastern time in front of the WH.

There’s no way he threw in any towel. He went on and on about how a barrier/wall is one part, but a vital part, of the border security upgrades needed.

I think he will declare and emergency if the commie dems keep sucking their thumbs and sticking them in their butts.

repost alert:

I trust my President.

A stance likely to subject me to much ridicule by the summer soldiers out in force on FR today.

Oh well.

Trump is doing a great job showing the American people that Schumer and Pelosi couldn’t care less about the people if they get in the way of their power. I just wish He had some assistance from other elected Republicans. Nancy has been yammering since this shut down began that she would not negotiate until the shutdown ended. Well, its ended, lets see what she does now.

And stop whining. (not directed at you jazusmo) Trump was never going to be able to win every battle, especially when he has no backing in Congress. He has fought harder than any elected official I have seen in my lifetime, and I fully believe he will impact illegal immigration in a positive way. Maybe not as much as we hoped, but he has already set the establishment back at least a generation.

I stand with you and our President!

Our FRiends always talk about the left/liberals having no impulse control or forethought. A lot of people on the right are exhibiting this same shortsightedness today.

Hannity (whom I’m not a big fan of) called it best years ago, we eat our own.

He could regain the initiative by firing those 6 air traffic controllers who nearly paralyzed east coast air travel today.

President Trump has already set the record for the longest shutdown ever. Perhaps he’s stalling for time until RBG dies. Then we don’t have to depend on the undependable Roberts for the Emergency wall not to be struck down by the Court of Supreme Whim.

They should at least be required to bring documentation from a doctor about their illness.

I think that the conference committee will include “some” border barrier in the funding plan for border security. There will be something in there for Trump to say he got something done. That’s what a compromise is.

His problem is that he acted like he would never compromise, so some assholes are disappointed in him. But you have to compromise, he’s not a king.

Well said.

I'm not a one issue voter. That's what women do....women like Pelosi.

Anyone think of anything else Pelosi has been supporting besides a trip to Afghanistan?

He agreed to end it ON HIS TERMS.

And he should get credit for getting these people their paychecks.
