‘Have I not been clear about the wall?’ Pelosi signals Trump still won’t get what he wants

ANALYSIS — It took 35 days, but President Donald Trump ultimately caved to Democratic demands that he reopen the government before they’d entertain negotiations on border security. And in 21 more, Trump will have to decide whether to give in again, because he’s not likely to get what he wants.

Trump agreed Friday to back a three-week continuing resolution that will reopen the government through Feb. 15. But he is not giving up on his quest to secure funding for wall along the southern border.

“We really have no choice but to build a powerful wall or steel barrier,” Trump said as he concluded remarks from the Rose Garden announcing the deal to temporarily reopen government. “If we don’t get a fair deal from Congress, the government will either shut down on Feb. 15 again or I will use the powers afforded to me under the laws and the Constitution of the United States to address this emergency.”

I'm quite sure Trump has been told by McConnell (and Pence) that that is a red line he cannot cross.

To which, Trump should say, "Watch Me!"

No wall is a losing position for the Democrats

You mean the Democrats who just won +40 seats in the House?

Better check your numbers.

To which Trump should say, "watch me"

So you don't bellieve there are 19 Senate Republicans who would vote to remove Trump if he does that?

I bet there are 30.

The "donor community" is not going to allow a wall. They are OK with changing the Supreme Court, but they will never, ever allow a wall.

Why did Reagan win a landslide in 1984? Was it because the country suddenly fell in love with Supply-Side Economics?

Of course not. It was because Reagan was perceived as a good leader, regardless of whether or not voters agreed with him.

The bottom line is Trump will sink or swim based on his perception as a leader, and that took a big hit yesterday. He’d better ultimately prevail on this, or he’s in big trouble.

Do it anyway. Seems to me if this is so important it would be worth risking the Presidency over, if he feels so strongly about it.

Why should Schulosi care? The Mexican cartels’ payoffs to their bank accounts is the only issue that matters to them.

Bet you I could remove a good portion of that SOB with a D6.

And before they got the cops in there to stop it.

Why should Schulosi care?

Stop with the "Democrats, Democrats" nonsense.

Yes, they have a lot more power now, including control of appropriations, than they had before January 2019.

BUT IT IS REPUBLICANS WHO STOPPED THE WALL. And they will continue to stop it, up to and including removing the President from office.

Focussing your attention on leftists doing what they do is missing the reason the wall is not completed already.

The reason is that the GOP does not want it, has never wanted it, and will do anything to stop it.

yours: “There’s a process and it only works if the AG and those working under him are honest about clearing out the swampers.”

mind: well said. and i would respectfully submit that it is certain past due time for PDJT to install “honest” AG/others working under him

he’s running out of time to get the job done, or even started

The wall will never happen as long as Trump is president.

It's on him if he hasn't declared the national emergency, started the wall, and secured the border if something horrific does happen. Then it would be "President Trump said it was an emergency and he did nothing. Why not?"

Chuck and Nancy put President Trump in a lose/lose situation, and Romney will gain a voice in the US Senate because of it....and he's as bad or worse than Flake and McCain combined.

Haven't you noticed? We're PLEADING with President Trump to do what he should've done when the DC crowd went home for Christmas vacation instead of negotiating a settlement! Name-calling conservative 'pubs isn't going to keep us in line; President Trump doing his job will!

He's not giving them "enough rope to hang themselves", he's giving them enough time so the wall won't be in place and proved its effectiveness for the next campaign cycle.

Can't we all just get together as one Deplorable voice and let President Trump know, loud and clear, that he was elected to stand up to evil leaders such as Nancy, and he gave her everything she wanted, plus a win that gets her new brats to tow the line!

Stop defending this. It's time for President Trump to man up, do the EO now because Witch Nancy announced she won't negotiate about the wall.

For two years the repubs held the house, the senate and the presidency. Immigration issues could have gotten fixed and the border wall funding could have been approved. The fact that all this border wall brouhaha happened only after the house repubs lost their majority is very telling. It’s all a big, disgusting game the politicians are playing and We the People are just pawns in their game. Also, just look at the lack of action now by the repubs in the senate. The long line of judges waiting to be approved is outrageous.

He has them all on record now so can call the National Emergency. It’s like when you fight a war you try all of your diplomatic options until they fail. The onus is on Congress and if they fail, he calls the National Emergency and this opens other options for him too.

He caved when he said he could of done the EO instead of doing it and catching them by surprise. He caved way back with Paul Ryan’s first budget, which didn’t rein in spending and didn’t include the wall. He caved when he said he was pulling (illegal) troops out of Syria, and now he’s maintaining a presence.

I repeat myself. Time is no longer on his side. If he doesn’t get that wall started and proving its effectiveness before the next campaign cycle, the wall will never happen. That means he has to have a portion of it done by March or so!
