I have come over time to be an amateur student of the state of Communism in the USA in the 1930’s well into the 1950’s.

I was fully engaged after I read Whittaker Chambers’ “Witness”. I came to realize three things after I read it:

ONE: Communist infiltration was pervasive in degrees ranging from simple dabblers to fully invested Soviet Agents.

TWO: Joseph McCarthy was spot on. He should be an American hero and venerated. His nearly single-handed efforts probably saved us up to two decades before the Communists in our country began to stick their heads up out of the ground again to where now it is open embraced and they are elected to office. He bought us time. Maybe not enough, but some.

THREE: The tactics of the Left are EXACTLY the same today as they were during the Hiss Perjury Trial. The Left is wedded to “the politics of personal destruction”. What the Left, in the form of the Truman Administration, the Democrat Party, and the Media tried to do to Whittaker Chambers was disgusting. They publicly insinuated he had homosexual relations with his then deceased brother. Unbelievable.

After I read that book, I could never watch television, read a newspaper or news magazine the same way. I couldn’t look at the education system the same way.

It was a transformative book for me. One of the absolute best books of that time, bar none, is M. Stanton Evans’ book “Blacklisted by History: Blacklisted by History: The Untold Story of Senator Joe McCarthy and His Fight against America’s Enemies”. Written by a man who was a cub reporter at the time and saw that travesty with his own eyes.

Oddly, after I read “Witness”, one of the first books I read after that was Ann Coulter’s “Treason”. In the book, she talked about the trial in a way I had never heard it before. It was a case of listening to two people tell you a version of events, and both cannot be true. One or the other has to be false. So I did did something that the Internet allowed you to do: Download the transcripts of the McCarthy Hearings, particularly the one with Joseph Welch who uttered the famous “At long last, have you left no sense of decency?”

I went right to that specific hearing, and read the entire transcript. What I found affected me deeply.

The version of events I had been taught in schools, the books I had read, the articles and opinions of today, all painted McCarthy as an aggressive monster bent on slandering innocent people with baseless accusations, shouting them down, intimidating them, and doing it all for political capital.

When reading the transcripts, the reality was quite different as outlined by Ann Coulter in her book. He was a reasonable and polite man who conducted his hearings with equanimity. He gave his witnesses and the people he accused plenty of non-interrupted time to make their case, no matter how long or ridiculous. And in that specific hearing, his assistant (Roy Cohn) was subjected to extensive, sarcastic, and demeaning ridicule by Joseph Welch who was questioning him. McCarthy politely tried to intervene by appealing calmly to the hearing chair, but Welch kept on after multiple appeals. IIRC, it went on for about 45 minutes when finally McCarthy had enough resulting in the infamous exchange.

It tells you a lot about Leftists, that they have to lie to make their point, because if they tell the truth, they make our point.

Thank you for your post. I will follow through on the the transcripts and Coulter’s book vs. “Witness”— that is fascinating, and the propaganda circulated against McCarthy, who was correct on many many item— all created by the Left to smear him, and not expose any more of their agents and fellow travelers.

Now... they are hand in hand with a controlled propaganda media as the mouthpiece of the dem leftist party. Still “selling” the fake narrative.

Yes. I concluded long ago that McCarthy was right - and a hero.

That was - and this is - all part of the Long March. I attended a Christian prep school in the 1970s. A (former) close friend, a Baptist (Democrat, as usual) spewed continual, gratuitous hatred for years against Nixon and McCarthy. (He liked me personally, so he was always trying to convert me - not to Christ, but, though he would not use the name, to Marx.)

That young man, who despised Republicans and conservatives, and who eventually embraced Marxism without the integrity to own its name, was a leader in his church community, and became an ordained minister. (I have often wondered how many souls he led astray.)

The church has embraced homoeroticism and other heresies because the church was already infiltrated and subverted long ago.

As the church goes, so goes the nation.

That is pretty sad. Just wow. The church was a fertile place for communists to infiltrate and influence...Alinksy and the Catholic church was a good example.

I am astonished when I drive by churches, and I see the rainbow flag on them, and just as bad “Black Lives Matter” flags and banners.
