CNN)Presidential hopeful Sen. Elizabeth Warren introduced legislation Wednesday seeking to stop the US from launching a first-strike nuclear weapons attack on another country.

Warren, of Massachusetts, and Rep. Adam Smith of Washington -- both of whom are Democrats -- introduced separate, but identical, bills in their individual chambers Wednesday. "By making clear that deterrence is the sole purpose of our arsenal, this bill would reduce the chances of a nuclear miscalculation and help us maintain our moral and diplomatic leadership in the world," they wrote in a joint statement.

Quote "and help us maintain our moral and diplomatic leadership in the world," they wrote in a joint statement.

From the party that is introducing legislation to let women murder their little fully developed babies!

Nope. Will never be signed by Trump. Will never get 2/3 override in both chambers.

They aren’t happy taking away just our gun rights. They want to mess with our nuclear weapons as well.

If our Intel finds that a nation like North Korea is about to launch, a preemptive strategic strike might very well be reasoned.

These bird-brains need to lay off messing with our nuclear options.

Such a law is first and foremost an unconstitutional infringement on the powers of the Executive branch.

The President is the Commander In Chief of the armed forces and has all discretion on the execution of war.

If the Legislative branch wishes to restrict the use of nuclear weapons they will have to use the power of the purse and not provide funds for their purchase or maintenance.

Any other restrictions would be a usurpation of power.

If we had a senate and house full of leftist idiots like Princess Grey Beard in WWII as we do today people west of the Mississippi would have been speaking Japanese for the last 75 years.

Correct.

The only Constitutional thing that Congress could do from a "moral" standpoint is refuse to declare a state of war against the nation that would be a potential target of a nuclear first strike.

Then we would have to see just how dire relations are between the two countries such that a nuclear strike is actually on the table as a reasonable proportional use of force, versus Congress's unwillingness to declare war amid those tensions.

If this doctrine of no first use were so important, why didn’t she introduce the same bill while the Kenyan was President.

"By making clear that deterrence is the sole purpose of our arsenal, this bill would reduce the chances of a nuclear miscalculation and help us maintain our moral and diplomatic leadership in the world,"

For anyone who has given any thought to the subject and has any notion of modern strategic thought this is a ‘well duh’ statement.

Nuclear weapons are today, with the exception of their deterrence value, of little use strategically.

I a day when surgical strikes are the norm a blunt force weapon like the BOMB sits in the closet and gathers dust.

I don’t underestimate the deterrence value of nuclear weapons but as for making real day to day modern war it is of no utility.
