Longtime Stanford scholar quits teaching American Indian course after PC mob mau-maus(T)

So the P.C. mob has gotten itself another one, at Stanford, where a longtime scholar of American Indian culture has cut his course after politically correct students hollered about "cultural appropriation." Apparently, you can't even discuss another culture without being accused of that. In this case, it's obvious what the implications are: a loss of scholarship and knowledge for Stanford, which is now diminished.

Legal scholar Jonathan Turley writes:

For 50 years, Stanford Professor Professor [sic] Kenneth Fields has taught the course "American Indian Mythology, Legend and Lore," Professor Fields has agreed to stop teaching the course. A nationally recognized academic and poet, Fields dropped the course after some students accused him of being "insensitive and inappropriate" and circulated a petition requesting to "improve" the course. The bases for the protest raise serious issues of academic freedom and the lack of of [sic] support for faculty in such disputes.

I have been critical of the widening charges of cultural appropriation and microaggressions on our campuses as statements and even programs are targeted with little resistance from faculty or administrators. (here and here). Indeed, there seems an ever-widening array of "microaggressions" and cultural appropriations.

He got out with what’s left of his hair. He should count himself lucky and switch to teaching a course on Custer.

I have nothing against teaching this at college level if it is in the tradition of James George Frazer and Jane Harrison and includes myth and ritual from world culture not just Indian lore.

This is part of the western canon and was taught by brilliant men like Stanley Edgar Hyman before being consigned to the trash bin.

Many / Most Indian tribes in pre-European America kept defeated enemies as slaves.

I vomited when I saw Chief Ten Teeth Phillips and his fellow Indians beating the drum WHILE HOLDING CELLPHONES.

Using cellphones is "cultural appropriation".

We resent the crap out of seeing Indians and other Indigenous Peoples using OUR cultures accomplishments. Let the damn Indians build a fire and use little smoke puffs for communication... And STOP driving our cars.. and using our computers. Keep the hell away from appropriating OUR culture.

We have 'feelings' too. Indigenous Peoples - STOP APPROPRIATING OUR STUFF!!

Hmmmm. I wonder if there was any discussion of how central Asians walked across the Aleutians when the tide was out into the Americas. I know peace and love and all but sooner or later some POS is going to want to be in control. Nothing in the latest APA journal will change that. Slavery will ensue. Thus, the 2nd amendment. Boy was this circular?

SJW: “I complained about the professor’s cultural appropriation and he completely dropped the class. No one else is available to teach the class. But that brought me down below full time and now my scholarship is cut to half-time! Now I have to go get a job to make ends meet! Woe is me!”

Try to expand the mind and objectivity about Native cultures and it is squashed. They have no right to complain about what the Christians did in the past.

What’s the difference? Same end result, the history of the culture is silenced.

Ya know.............where were the smoke signals? And hyrogliphic (sp) depictions of the event carved into the Lincoln Memorial? Was Lincoln anti-native American?

Good news! This prof has been reassigned to teach a course on the origins of basketball. Since John Naismith was a whitey, no minorities will be allowed to take the course.

If he has been teaching this course for 50 years he is at least 75 and more likely 80 years old. Probably getting ready to retire.
