Johns Hopkins Pushes for Armed Police on Campus
Wall Street Journal ^ | February 1, 2019 | Scott Calvert

BALTIMORE—Johns Hopkins University is seeking state approval to create an armed police force, something that many urban universities have but that has sparked a clash over relations between police and minority communities.

The private university has proposed building a force of about 100 armed officers over three to five years to patrol on and around its three city campuses as violent crime has been on the rise. The new department’s off-campus jurisdiction would be set by an agreement with city police.

...

The proposal has received pushback from some area residents, lawmakers and students, who are concerned about potential racial profiling and a lack of accountability with a privately operated security force.

...

Violent crime in Baltimore has long been higher than in many other big cities, but it has stayed at an unusually elevated level since 2015. That year, rioting broke out after Freddie Gray, a black man, died from injuries sustained in police custody. The Justice Department then launched what proved to be a scathing probe of the city’s police department, and some community leaders and former police officials speculated some officers had pulled back from a more proactive approach on the street.

Mr. Daniels traces the quest for a Hopkins police force to late 2017, after a spate of robberies around its campuses. He has said his real fear is if armed robberies continue, eventually one will go very wrong. He and aides visited the University of Pennsylvania, University of Chicago and University of Southern California, which all have their own police agencies. Several public colleges in Baltimore also have sworn departments.

If the regular police aren't deterring criminals, someone else better, or students will go somewhere else to college.

Who, and how many, are the “some” students and residents who don’t want this? Johns Hopkins neighborhood has a lot of crime and I bet that most residents nearby would be happy for increased police presence.

In Baltimore the police aren’t allowed to deter criminals.

The MOST ironic thing about this article is that Mike Bloomberg, Mr. Gun-Banner, just gave a sheep-load of money to his alma mater, John Hopkins, and to their Gun Policy department or whatever it is called. I thought guns were bad.

****************

Bingo! It therefore follows that it doesn’t matter how many police they put out on the street. Baltimore is a crime infested city and will remain so as long as Democrats are in control.

Sadly, a number of major big city universities are located in bad neighborhoods. Perhaps politically correct administrators and students, experience angst about thinking about protecting the university from feral youth, because in their dream world, the feral youth aren’t really there???

I thought guns were bad.

Only for regular, law-abiding Americans.

Its always been bad around JHU Homewood campus (Baltimore).
I had a friend whose girlfriend went there for her PhD, she was murdered in her apartment. This was back in the 1980s.

Armed police departments for universities have been around for years——amazing that Johns Hopkins doesn’t already have one.

Johns Hopkins is in one of the most crime-ridden areas of the city, which is saying something.

People who object to this are morons.

I have two college grads, two there now, and one HS junior.

I can tell you that awareness of this issue with regard to school choice has exploded in the past two years.

It doesn’t (yet) affect the top tier, so, for example, Penn is still OK but Temple is hurting. I imagine Hopkins is still recruiting well, but even there something will need to be done about you-know-who.

I was there quite a few years ago, and they needed an armed police force back then (especially on the Medical School campus)!!!!

I’m surprised that they STILL don’t have armed police!!!!

Guns are bad! But they are only bad for poor people. Guns are good for rich folks who who can afford a private, well-armed security force. Folks like Rosie O'Donnell, for example.
