I share your question about what this could possibly mean. The "records" are what's in the phone itself, or perhaps in the phone company's log (if Smollett's own log was erased from his phone). I don't know what Smollett is "gathering."

That is one angle that I noticed: probably very few Trump supporters watch Smollett's show or even knew who he was prior to the alleged incident. How, then, would they instantly recognize him from across the street when he's all bundled-up in heavy clothing? How would they know he was gay?
