New York will now officially be allowed to decide together how educators should be evaluated, with some oversight from the state Education Department, and no requirement that standardized tests must play a role.

Pretty sure they'll go to "self created ratings" and check the box to select pay raise, either 5% or 8% based on how the teacher feels about themselves.

The issue is the “standardized tests”, which are not and objective measure of a teacher’s capabilities.

First, is the subject matter to be tested. What exactly is the material on the “standardized test” and how does it get put on there?

That is really the crux of the issue...what exactly are the measuring and what value does it have with the abilities of the student. Not every kid is college material, they either lack the ability or the motivation to successfully complete a “hard science” degree. I don’t consider soft sciences to be worthy of accreditation (i.e. journalism).

It seems that the demonRATs have gone full bore in showing the American people just how deep their animus goes- for us and for our beliefs. They ARE our enemy and WANT to destroy us.

I am a retired educator and a grandmother now, but I beg you all- take BACK your children and your (state level only) education systems. Dismantle the abomination that they have built.

Absolutely. Very succinct and to the point.

Thank you, sir.

I don’t blame teachers for not wanting to be evaluated on the basis of standardized test scores. This is because they probably have a tight schedule for quality teaching, especially if they’re also expected to indoctrinate kids with Democratic agenda government entitlement programs, pro-LGBT politics, and global warming alarmism.

On top of that, some teachers undoubtedly have to spend time working with troubled kids.

Insights welcome.

Evaluating teachers is just about more money. Try to get rid of a crappy teacher. It can't be done.

Have been saying right along. We need more "tech" schools...hands on work training programs.

Too much cr** in the curriculum. Why does every kid have to take a second language?

Have been saying right along. We need more "tech schools"....hands on work training programs....apprentice programs.

Kids should be able to get jobs in industry when they get out of high school and grow with a company....of course that's old school.

College should be an option not a requiremnt for all jobs.

“Dem Progressives like Dumbing Down of students; they are easier to manipulate. It is the Progressive, anti-American Way.”

If Millennials haven’t proved the educational system is corrupt and broken, nothing will. When I retire, hopefully by then my future grandchildren will be old enough for me to home school. If that cannot be done, I will pay for the kids education. I will never allow my children (who are Millennials) to send their kids to public or parochial school.

Never...

Mea culpa. I did not mean to address the political party affiliation of teachers.

I meant to suggest that there are undoubtedly some patriot teachers who are pressured to teach Democratic agenda.

It would be racist to evaluate those poor illiterate teachers on the basis of results.

When I went to school students didn't have rights, they had responsibilities. The best teachers in the world can't educate the unwilling empowered student, who can bring charges of.....at the drop of a hat.

Try employing some of that vaunted “Conservative critical thinking” here and realize that this situation is not as simple as it may seem on the surface...

Well said.

"What do these parents do with their kids during summer break?"

Any young person over 10 years of age....should have chores/jobs, keep their rooms clean, help with the house work ... see if neighbors need help ... were you being sarcastic?

What do they do for summer break? usually pawn them off on retired or non working relitives, a neighbor, the kids friends parents who are home, or find a sitter.

The original comment was alluding to the fact that some parents use public schools merely as daycare and that when school is out, they have to take a day off of work to care for their kids. So I’m assuming small children is who are being discussed.

It’s a legitimate question. If school is being used as daycare, what is done during the summer break, since people don’t stop working jobs in the summer as well.

Good post. I have experience too, and would propose that teachers be hired every year based on a value to the school that is determined by a combination of many factors.
1. Tests of students need to be administered at least twice so that a teacher gets tested on learning on the average and not on the basis of having a class of high achievers while some other teacher gets stuck with the class described in your post.
2. Rating by parents and students after the class has been finished
3. Ratings by administrators
4. Demand for the teacher during enrollment
5. Scores on teacher proficiency exams given periodically
6. Rates of continuation for classes that are elective — for example does a student take more math than is required to graduate? This may reflect on the performance of the math department.
If all teachers were subject to the above rehire policy, then schools would weed out poor performers and of course the Union would also be gone.

Under this policy, teachers would be treated like the professionals we want them to be, and good teachers would improve student standard test scores.

And one final note, students should be permitted to enroll in any school in town with tax money on a percentage basis going to the school from the community — yes, like a voucher system. This is the ultimate in teacher assessment.
