Nice day today as it got to 50 and should be about the same for several days. Isn’t it nice that our President Donald Trump has already cured global warming also and it has only been a little over 2 years.

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

HAROLD ARLEN

RHYTH-MANIA: ”BETWEEN THE DEVIL AND THE DEEP BLUE SEA”

This 1931 Cotton Club review produced an immortal, and this weekend is dedicated to the many great versions of the song.

Cab Calloway, in his early days, got the hit, and he does some mighty fine scat singing. The melodic leap for the words “in between” is the hook. Yes, that’s a tuba backing the bass line even though we’re in the electric recording era.

Update on The Mayor from Luv W....please keep those prayers coming.

Friday: Every time they try to take him off sedation to test his air he becomes agitated with delirium, so he is going in for an MRI to see if he suffered any stroke or bleed in the brain. They’re also trying to figure out the source of an infection, possibly in the gall bladder. He’ll be in for tests til about 2:30 today

KEEP PRAYING, FOLKS!

We miss you, Rus!!

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

HAROLD ARLEN

RHYTH-MANIA: ”BETWEEN THE DEVIL AND THE DEEP BLUE SEA”

In its early years, this song was classified as “race music,” something we classify today as “rhythm and blues.” This was due to the song’s genesis at the Cotton Club. In 1932, Satchmo put his brand on the song, and when Louis said it was jazz, it was jazz! His vocal style was inelegant, but it works just perfectly with this song. When puts that trumpet to his lips, even muted, it takes off for the sky.

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

HAROLD ARLEN

RHYTH-MANIA: ”BETWEEN THE DEVIL AND THE DEEP BLUE SEA”

In the Fifties, white artists would cover early rock and roll tunes in order to get white girls to buy the records and get around their parents’ objections to the new music. This wasn’t a new phenomenon. In the 1920s, Paul Whiteman was the man “who made a lady out of jazz.” In the 1930s, this recording shows how one could “tame” the music of the Cotton Club. That’s the Dorsey brothers backing the girls.
