It might be a sign of the end-times, or simply a function of our currently scrambled politics, but earlier this week, four feminist activists three from a self-described radical feminist organization Womens Liberation Front appeared on a panel at the Heritage Foundation. Together they argued that sex was fundamentally biological, and not socially constructed, and that there is a difference between women and trans women that needs to be respected. For this, they were given a rousing round of applause by the Trump supporters, religious-right members, natural law theorists, and conservative intellectuals who comprised much of the crowd. If you think Ive just discovered an extremely potent strain of weed and am hallucinating, check out the video of the event.
Ive no doubt that many will see these women as anti-trans bigots, or appeasers of homophobes and transphobes, or simply deranged publicity seekers. (The moderator, Ryan Anderson, said they were speaking at Heritage because no similar liberal or leftist institution would give them space or time to make their case.) And its true that trans-exclusionary radical feminists or TERFs, as they are known, are one minority that is actively not tolerated by the LGBTQ... Because its an argument that seems to me to contain a seed of truth. Hence, I suspect, the intensity of the urge to suppress it.
The title of the Heritage panel conversation The Inequality of the Equality Act refers to the main legislative goal for the Human Rights Campaign, the largest LGBTQ lobbbying group in the US. The proposed Equality Act a federal nondiscrimination bill that has been introduced multiple times over the years in various formulations would add gender identity to the Civil Rights Act of 1964, rendering that class protected by anti-discrimination laws, just as sex is.

And its true that trans-exclusionary radical feminists or TERFs, as they are known, are one minority that is actively not tolerated by the LGBTQ establishment, and often demonized by the gay community. Its also true that they can be inflammatory, offensive, and obsessive. But what interests me is their underlying argument, which deserves to be thought through, regardless of our political allegiances, sexual identities, or tribal attachments. Because its an argument that seems to me to contain a seed of truth. Hence, I suspect, the intensity of the urge to suppress it.

Socialists agenda has been to attempt to destroy any common ground of normalcy people have with one another.
We could all live together much better if these socialist “ism baiters” were dealt with and eradicated permanently.
Transsexual people are different.
I read an article recently, by someone undergoing the “sex change” , who lamented that his body would treat his new vagina as an open sore, and how much care is needed to take care of his new vagina.
I've been saying this for at least ten years. If you make the boxes for accepted "gender" roles smaller and smaller, you make the population of people who are "gender nonconforming" a majority.
I am a 52-year-old woman, married 30 years to one man as of next Monday, with ten children, all our natural, biological offspring.
However, I am not a "real woman." I have short hair and lead several church committees. Only men have short hair and lead church committees.
Yes, and Sullivan is doing his best to stand athwart and shout NO!
And so are these lesbians.
This may be the tail that calls the dog to halt.
He is defending homosexuality. A homosexual can “teach” us the “truth” about sex? Get real.
They are very different.
Sad.
They have played this too far and push back is here, and from the homosexual and lesbian community, who happen to LIKE being bio men and bio women.
Homosexual men don’t want to have sex with women. Homosexual women don’t want to have sex with men. Well, duh.
The question is whether they can make it stick politically. Andrew Sullivan has some clout, but big guns are arrayed on the other side.
Of course he is defending homosexuality, he’s a homosexual. the piece is about a Bill winding its way through that removes biology as a consideration at all!
This is a big deal, because if it this bill goes through, as he documents, life for everyone will be very very different.
And if you dont think that the courts wont be used to push this.... well, you have no memory.
TC, you’re our church lady and we love you.
I know, but the fact that it is coming out in the press, just like a few push back articles on the trans have come out in mainstream journals like the NYT and Psychology today...I wold say that there is a small movement in the direction many would like to see things go...
3rd wave feminism has jumped the shark and jumped on the trans bandwagon.
TERFs recognize it's gone too far. I doubt they can put the genie back in the bottle but it's nice to see them conceding trans rights crossed the line.
Rb, sweetie *kiss*, that only shows you don’t know me well enough.
there is a lot of anger from second wave feminists and lesbians over trans.
Lesbians dislike women who transition to men as much as they dislike men who transition to women.
This will be an interesting cultural conversation to watch.
I hope people are paying attention to this. I hope they are paying attention to the OMG Radical! abortion laws that are simply codifying at the state level the situation we already have nationwide.
Read, people. Read.
We do need to pay attention.
TC I so appreciate you!
TMI
Oh, “people” read, alright...the HEADLINES in the FAKE news....I think that’s about it...sadly.
“they argued that sex was fundamentally biological, and not socially constructed”
This is anti LBGQT-LSMFT!
