Thousands of people across Russia on Sunday took to the streets to call for trash reform, in what has become a political flashpoint for the country.
Organizers said some 26 regions took part in a nationwide demonstration titled Russia is not a dump, in protest of Moscows plan to solve a trash crisis by sending waste to surrounding regions.
Last March, more than fifty children were hospitalized in a town outside of Moscow after a trash dump began emanating noxious fumes, sparking protests across the Moscow region.
On Jan. 1, so-called national trash reform took effect, which tasked regions with choosing operators to collect waste. But critics say the plan will only increase the costs of garbage collection.
The highest turnout on Sunday was in the northern region of Arkhangelsk, a city some 1,200 kilometers north of Moscow, organizers said. The region is one of several set to take in Moscows waste. In an earlier protest on Dec. 2, organizers said some 30,000 turned out there.
Protestors held signs reading Russia is not a dump and I want to breathe and chanted for recycling measures. Several dozen police who were observing proceedings confiscated posters considered overtly political.

Reminds me of this other trash imbroglio:
In a letter to the Mayor, Virginia’s Governor, James S. Gilmore 3d, said, ‘’I am offended by your suggestion that New York’s substantial cultural achievements, such as they are, obligate Virginia and other states to accept your garbage.’’
On Wednesday, the Mayor outlined his vision of a ‘’reciprocal relationship’’: three million people a day visit the city for culture and business, and some of the considerable amount of garbage they generate should follow them back home, especially once the Fresh Kills landfill in Staten Island closes in 2001.
The Mayor’s comments were prompted by an earlier threat from Mr. Gilmore to pursue a ban on garbage arriving in Virginia on barges. Mr. Gilmore said that the influx of New York City trash to Virginia has increased sharply in recent weeks, and Waste Management Inc., a national disposal company, recently signed a contract with a barge company that would enable it to ship up to 4,000 more tons there.]

Our recycling system seems to work really well, at least for us. We sort our trash, the aluminum is recycled, and the rest is put on barges and sent to the Third World, where they ‘disposition’ it, as they see fit, usually for fuel.
Is this the best you can come up with today. A story about evil Russian trash.
