The most recent, less than Super Bowl notwithstanding, the N.F.L. continues to be a behemoth, dominating the sports landscape in revenue, attendance and television ratings.
That popularity has over the years tempted entrepreneurs to try to cash in by starting professional football leagues of their own. The latest effort is the Alliance of American Football, which plays its first games on Saturday.
There have been plenty of pretenders to the N.F.L.s crown over the years. None have succeeded, but all had their share of novelty.

Some history of other competitors, follows that...

The article included this:
TV CBS, CBS Sports Network, TNT and NFL Network (Saying I believe that CBS will cover the new league, starting tomorrow?)
The Times said: The Alliance of American Football, though, will have to overcome the obstacles that others could not, including runaway expenses, limited media exposure and a lack of fans.

Just saying, during the last efforts at real competition, there were not a bunch of NFL fans burned up at the league's arrogance.
That may have changed.
Suggestion to the new league. Have your season partially overlap with the NFL’s season. Start in June or July, and run into October or November. This will better position you to pick off some of the NFL’s fan base next time they falter. And they will falter. This new league has a better business structure which will allow it to get a handle on the things that have ruined the NFL for a lot of fans - player unaccountability and free agency. This new league solely owns all the teams, which means the league can set their own salary and free agency policies without interference from the courts.
The AAF is NOT planning to even TRY to compete with the NFL.
Fwiw, I’ve already become a fan of the SAN ANTONIO COMMANDERS.

Kaepernick’s attorney is demanding that his client be made a part of this new venture.
“I think most football fans would agree with me that Colin is owed at least this much!”
Imagine a league in which the individual teams aren’t forced to out bid each other for players because the courts haven’t imposed and artificial ‘free market’ on the company. Imagine a league in which a uniform disciplinary policy on things like, oh I don’t know, disrespecting the flag during the National Anthem, was set by the league with an eye on what’s best for the game as a whole, instead of what’s best for individual owners who don’t want to hurt their team’s playoff chances by suspending an offending player.
Oh I agree 100%.
Absolutely. There is yet ANOTHER football league coming online soon too.
In fact I was just browsing for information on the other league, when I noticed this one is launching on Saturday.
I’ll keep looking, and update everyone on the other one, when I find that.

I believe this is the other, according to this, the XFL will re-start in 2020
I'm assuming you made that up.
Oh hum, in the spring, my sports are auto racing (NASCAR/Indy/F1/modifieds/etc.) and baseball.
The USFL’s San Antonio Gunslingers were owned by a politically connected Democrat named Clinton Manges. Still, I doubt “Gunslingers” would be allowed in today’s PC climate.
Maybe the AFF and XFL can have their own “Super Bowl”.
I have been wondering whether either of the leagues will have an equivalent contest, I presume so.
But to have the two leagues compete would be an outstanding idea.
They of course would have to resolve the diferences between the rules in the two leagues. Not sure if that would be a problem.
But that is a great idea.
Call it the Ultra Bowl! (TM)
