Virginias ongoing scandals of racist yearbook photos and resignation demands are starting to have repercussions on the states taxes and spending.
The 2017 federal tax cut signed into law by President Trump capped the amount of state and local taxes that could be deducted, which could add up to a higher tax bill to some Virginians. This year, Virginia Republicans wanted to cut taxes to offset that by raising the standard deduction on state income taxes.

VA governors can’t serve consecutive terms, so there’s no re-election pressure. And he couldn’t run for any other office as a Democrat in VA, anyway, given how the black vote (~50% of the Democratic primary vote) would be monolithically against him. Plus, the guy’s an economic conservative and social liberal - a George HW Bush-type politician. So this scandal, which has put a ceiling on his political aspirations, means he doesn’t have to compromise with Democratic liberals any more. Him staying in office will be a real bonanza for the GOP in VA.
