Cambria CEO Marty Davis backs Trump on trade, and thinks you should, too (Quartz supplier)
Star Tribune ^ | February 08, 2019 - 5:46 PM | Jim Spencer Washington Correspondent

Marty Davis thinks President Donald Trump has “done more that’s right for trade in America than any president since World War II.” Davis, a Minnesotan and member of one of the country’s richest families, once worked on his family’s massive dairy farm. Now, he runs Cambria, a producer of quartz used in countertops and other surfaces. His battle against Chinese competitors who dumped hundreds of millions of dollars worth of government-subsidized quartz slabs into the U.S. market from 2010-2018 made him a true believer in Trump’s tariffs on some imports. Davis said the Chinese offered finished quartz at prices below the cost of his raw material. He calls Trump “courageous, intelligent and right” on trade issues. China is engaged in “global economic warfare,” Davis believes. If they win, he said, “their power is greater than that of the military.” Davis said “fake” low prices set by foreign government subsidies have lured U.S. corporate executives and consumers alike. But the homegrown multimillionaire believes that if the U.S. does not push back with trade sanctions, the cost of short-term bargains could be the extinction of the country’s middle-income manufacturing workers.

I (really) believe that this is driven by exchange rates.

For real.

At some point that will be addressed, might darn well as be now.

Completely serious.

We got quartz countertops in newly built home. Surprisingly, they’re more expensive than granite, but they have some advantages. I HOPE they’re not Chinese made.

I used to manage a fabrication shop for countertops. Quartz can be made in China - but not the name brands.

I did business with the Cambria people....visited their plant in Minnesota where the Cambria quartz is made. They market it as a high-end quartz, but it’s no better than the other products. Perhaps some nicer colours.

The nicest quartz (IMHO) is Caesarstone - made in Israel and around for years longer than the others. I have Caesarstone tops in my kitchen. Quartz doesn’t have the drawbacks that granite does.

I sold and installed a lot of tops. I liked Cambria because there weren’t different prices for different colors.

There is a Caesarstone plant in Midway, Georgia. I drive by there on the way to one of my favorite seafood restaurants.

True - all colours, one price. I forgot about that. They did have a LOT of beautiful colours. The one thing I didn’t like about them was that they did not sell slabs for fabricators to fabricate....they had to do all of the fabricating from their plant. They were also VERY rigid. Their way or the highway, and they passed any issue they possibly could onto the customer.

Actually, now that I think of it, I very much disliked their way of doing business. Plus they were a bunch of paranoid people full of their own importance, real or imagined.

I was more the sales and supervise install retailer to the homeowner. My fabricator templated, delivered and set them. Then I’d proceed with sink connections etc., but they never told me of any problems like that with Cambria. I just don’t know.

So you were the beginning and end of the process. I was the middle - we templated, submitted drawings, picked up from the Cambria plant north of Toronto and installed. Dealing with the company was brutal. They were machines, not people.
