On the other side of the same coin, there is certain and identifiable damage to US citizens if this question is NOT asked. It is the census numbers that determines the number of representatives in the House of Representatives.
Every region with a collective of illegal, foreign invaders being counted will be assigned more House of Reps. Screw the rest of the stable numbered citizen regions without invaders being counted as their representation votes in congress will be watered down by the towering increase of rep votes by those sanctuary invader district.
This entire illegals thing is ONLY and ALL ABOUT POWER. It has zero decimal zero to do with race, ethnicity, children or any of the emotional trigger lines put out by the MSM and Democrats.
Apportionment is based on the headcount, not if those counted are citizens, permanent residents, or illegals. The left fears the citizenship question because they believe illegals will choose not to be counted rather than answering truthfully.
[This entire illegals thing is ONLY and ALL ABOUT POWER.]
It’s more than that. Federal dollars are based on population as well as the number of congressional seats that are given to a state.
Several blue states have lost 1000s and are propping up their numbers with illegals.

The census numbers also determine the number of electoral college votes.
