I can't blame them. To actually get involved in politics necessitates abandoning the morals, values and ethics that got you there in the first place. To accomplish anything in politics means having to make compromises to get, only a part of, what you wanted in the first place. A life in politics means having to sleep with the devil from time to time.
President Trump, IMO, is the singular exception. He's not a politician. He's a patriot and a businessman who saw a need and stepped in. And I don't know where we would ever get another like him.
Compromising with bad policy is like adding sewage to your drinking water.
