House Dems will not strip Omar of her committee assignments: report

House Democrats reportedly will not strip Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) of her committee assignments after she apologized for tweets suggesting that American lawmakers were motivated to defend Israel by money.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) told Roll Call that "of course" Democrats would not strip Omar of committee assignments like Republicans did to Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa.) after he questioned how terms like "white supremacy" became offensive.

“I don’t think she’s anti-Semitic,” Hoyer reportedly said. “She did apologize. The key will be that when we make a mistake like that, conscious or unconscious, that we don’t repeat it. That will be the proof of the pudding.”

House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.) also reportedly said he doesn’t think extra action is needed given Omar apologized.

Omar is currently on the House Foreign Affairs, Education and Labor committees.

The freshman lawmaker sparked backlash Sunday when she retweeted journalist Glenn Greenwald responding to a story about House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) promising "action" against her and fellow Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) over their critical views on Israel.

"It's all about the Benjamins baby," Omar tweeted.

Omar then tweeted that the American Israeli Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) was paying American politicians to support Israel.

She apologized Monday for using "anti-Semitic tropes, but stood by her criticism of AIPAC.

"At the same time, I reaffirm the problematic role of lobbyists in our politics, whether it be AIPAC, the NRA or the fossil fuel industry. It's gone on too long and we must be willing to address it," Omar wrote.

House Minority Whip Steve Scalise (La.) was the only Republican House leader to explicitly call for her to be removed from committee assignments.

"Good that some Dems have condemned the disgraceful anti-Semitic remarks of Rep. Omar — but their words are empty unless Dem leaders remove her from the Foreign Affairs Committee. No one with her anti-Semitic views should be allowed to represent US foreign policy on that committee," he said in a tweet.

In recent days, as a Minnesota state Representative, Democrat Ilhan Omar, has campaigned with Minnesota Attorney General candidate Keith Ellison (Democrat-Muslim-MN). Omar is the Democratic nominee for the federal House seat, MN CD-5, that Ellison is vacating. She is the assumed favorite to win the seat.

The allegations stem from Omar’s 2009 marriage to British citizen Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, her apparent brother. Below, exclusive new evidence backs the claim that this marriage was fraudulent. Also, this new evidence suggests that student loan fraud and immigration fraud were Omar’s motivations for marrying Mr. Elmi.

In 2016, shortly after Rep. Omar defeated 44-year incumbent Phyllis Kahn in the Democratic primary for MN House District 60B, someone anonymously posted the initial allegations on the SomaliSpot.com message board.

But notice that neither one has been accused of being “haters”. That word is reserved strictly for republicans and conservatives. All she did was raise a concern about if there were groups that were contributing a lot of money so that politicians would support Israel. Why not just answer the question and move on?
