Gov. Newsom abandons California high-speed rail plan!
Axios ^ | 02/12/2019 | Shannon Vavra

California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Tuesday that the state will no longer pursue plans to build an estimated $77 billion high-speed rail line between Los Angeles and San Francisco because the project "would cost too much and respectfully take too long," per the AP.

The big picture: The project was years behind schedule with an estimated completion date of 2033. It had been hamstrung by political backlash in the state, and polling showed that a majority of Californians disapproved of the plan as costs ballooned.

Similar proposals for high-speed trains on the East Coast, including along the heavily trafficked Northeast Corridor between Washington, D.C., and Boston, have also fallen apart due to opposition and massive cost estimates, per the New York Times.

Haven’t they already spent 30 ***BILLION*** dollars on this thing?

Have they even broken ground on it?

Apparently when they said “good jobs” they meant for lawyers, activists and politicians.

an interstate highway along the border would be nice

Why not a bio-fuel river?

Energy independence/national security

Green jobs.

And one can always set it on fire

(if necessary)

He’s keeping the train between Bakersfield and Merced. So we won’t need to use a plane between those two points. Maybe AOC will settle for that.

That's kind of like keeping the monorail between North Haverbrook and Ogdenville.

Maybe he can run a spur from Bakersfield to connect with the the taco trolley there.

Isn’t the driving time between Bakersfield and Merced about 2 hours? By the time you drive to the station, find a place to park, wait for a train(assuming it is not delayed) and go from the station to your final destination it will be longer than two hours.

And the cost of a ticket would need to be several thousand dollars for them to break even.

This is LOL funny. The report: https://www.hsr.ca.gov/docs/programs/green_practices/sustainability/Sustainability_Report_2018.pdf is all lies.

Now they are admitting it's all lies. They planted some trees. Might still be there, even if dead. At least those can be verified.

Bakersfield to Merced. $5,000 one-way ticket. Leaves once a day. Takes 3 hours (you can drive it in 2-1/2). And they’ll still have to subsidize it $2 billion per year to keep it maintained and running.

They could have rebuilt all of CA-99 fifty times over for the money they wasted.

And people why we hate government.

It will have to be an earthquake-proof train on special miracle metal rails.

When I look at that picture of the re-bars standing at attention, I think, “if the wall is ever breached by invaders from the South, they should be shot as any sovereign nation would repel an invasion.”

Can’t wait to see what the fares will be for the approximately ten people per day who will ride that route.
__________
He said in a video that some people call it a train to nowhere but that it is unfair to say that. I can’t imagine that the train will be crowded. Maybe it was just a payoff to someone. I don’t live anywhere near it, so I sure won’t be using it.

The original estimates were about 39 Billion. The cost estimate has been climbing ever since then. Months ago, someone on this site suggested that instead of building the trains and tracks, just buy airline tickets for those passengers. The estimate then was in the 90s of Billions. Damn, I wish I was in on the money grab.
