Power Play: Symbolic sleight of hand by Senate majority leader
The Boston Herald ^ | 02-14-2019 | Herald Staff

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, perhaps the GOP’s 2018 MVP, may be on his way to another title.

In a senatorial sleight of hand, he has suddenly put opportunistic colleagues who have been swept up the in the AOC tailwinds in an uncomfortable position. They are now going to have to vote on the Green New Deal, which they have loudly supported, in the well of the Senate.

The Green New Deal, a proposal rolled-out by freshman Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Sen. Ed Markey on the Senate side, is a fantastical plan to combat climate change and completely remodel the economy of the United States. It would move the country completely away from fossil fuels and onto renewables (but not nuclear) in about a decade.

In truth, it would be an economical and ultimately humanitarian disaster.

Additionally, some of those Democrats are the very same ones who comported themselves disgracefully during the Brett Kavanaugh hearings. Americans should give no quarter to their protests.

We look forward to hearing those senators plead their case to the American people as to why they should be trusted to sit in the Oval Office. This vote will be a welcome litmus test.

This is how you play politics.

When your opponents make a mistake like this, make them pay for it. I just hope the Repubs know how to capitalize on it....

I hope I'm wrong on republican abilities in that respect. I hope that the past few decades of watching them squander every opportunity to govern is not indicative of what we can expect today. It would be glorious for either party to turn into a group that believes in the rule of law and putting the Constitution as written and the interests of American people first. That would also be a major surprise.

Oh, the Democrats will not openly vote FOR the “Green New Deal”, they will just vote “Present” and claim that the program is only in the planning stages, there is “nothing” to base a vote of affirmation on.

But on a recorded vote, the vote of “Present” may be taken to mean “Yes”.

Denial is not just a river in Egypt.

I share your concerns. I hope that Republicans can overcome their impulse to save Democrats from their own mistakes.

“Common sense says they can’t ban all airplanes. You can be sure the elite will be able to. It is just us peons this bill is directed at.”

They should implement this in progressive blue states first.
Give it a few years for the rest of the country to see the improvements. Then roll it out.

Democrats, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and her Muslin allies in Congress are on a determined, planned pathway to politically destroy the entire Democrat Party. Keep it up, Democrats, “All”...your political doomsday is approaching rapidly. Tee-Hee: Leaders, Nancy Pelosi & Chuck Schumer have not one iota of leadership qualities among them.

Take that vote McConnell, like today!!!

So President Trump put McConnell and for that matter Graham in positions by some means that they can’t do anything else other than act like their leader. That does not make McConnell MVP. Perhaps MVP of the GOP however but I don’t trust the GOP. President Trump is the MVP of our current citizenry.

The Boston Herald is relentlessly pro-Republican and supports conservative positions. You must be thinking of the Boston Globe.

It’s for the Common Good, donchaknow.
The ‘Climate Change’ true believers are willing to sacrifice for the cause. And they mean for you/us to join the ride.
The trick will be to keep them off balance and not to become the enemy. Movements can do terrible things if they think the Enemy is preventing their goals.
This is a positive move by McConnell.

He’s doing getting the judicial picks through as fast as he can, and rumor has it that he will go for a rule change that will require only a simple majority (instead of 2/3) to end the filibusters that the Dems have been launching. This is the so-called “nuclear option.” I hope he does it.
