Let us celebrate Valentine's Day with Live at Leeds!!

Why? Well, because this magnificent live album was recorded on Valentine's Day 1970. It is arguably the best live album ever.

So, if you LOVE rock, cuddle up with your significant other, pour a brandy, and get ready to groove to...The Ooo!!

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

HAROLD ARLEN

COTTON CLUB PARADE OF 1932: ”I’VE GOT THE WORLD ON A STRING”

His piano technique was ferocious, but this 1938 recording finds him in a relaxed mood.

I’ll be covering that tune tonight and tomorrow night. There are versions recorded only a few years ago. It’s one of the immortals.

COTTON CLUB PARADE OF 1932: ”I’VE GOT THE WORLD ON A STRING”

This is early in Nat’s career just after the war. He was singing now, not just playing piano.

COTTON CLUB PARADE OF 1932: ”I’VE GOT THE WORLD ON A STRING”

This is Ella in 1950 backed by Sy Oliver. Take a listen to her range.

Ella Fitzgerald: “I’ve Got the World on a String”

Ella revisited this tune in 1976 with a disk that featured her with just Joe Pass on guitar. The disk won a Grammy in 1977.

Cole was one of the best. The irony is that he started singing in order to help promote his piano playing.

COTTON CLUB PARADE OF 1932: ”I’VE GOT THE WORLD ON A STRING”

This is Frank in 1953 working with Nelson Riddle for the first time. No more strings and syrupy arrangements! This is a fine Big Band take on the tune.

Frank Sinatra: “I’ve Got the World on a String” (1953)

This is rare color footage of Frank working in Las Vegas in 1965. That’s Nelson Riddle wielding the baton.

Frank Sinatra: “I’ve Got the World on a String” (1965)

By 1979, this had become one of Frank’s trademark tunes. This is from a TV broadcast dedicated to his 65th birthday.

Crazy. In a perfect world, his piano would have been enough! Though I liked his voice, too!
