Ocasio-Cortez Slams The 'Racial Injustice' Of The Cannabis Business As White Men Profit

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) earned praise from “drug justice” advocates after criticizing a growing marijuana legalization and business model that is paving the way for white male investors to reap major profits after minorities spent decades in prisons for selling pot.

She made her comments during a House Financial Services subcommittee hearing this week on banking services for the burgeoning cannabis industry as more states legalize the sale and use of marijuana.

She suggested the growing industry was “compounding the racial wealth gap” by allowing wealthy white-dominated companies to gain a quick advantage in the industry. She complained that communities most affected by drug incarcerations are the “last in the door” when it comes to profiting now from legalized cannabis.

The nonprofit Drug Policy Alliance praised her position. “We must legalize marijuana in a way that recognizes and repairs the disastrous, disproportionate harms of the drug war ... on people of color,” the organization tweeted after the hearing.

Ocasio-Cortez cited statistics from Colorado and Washington, where marijuana is legal for recreational use, that 73 percent of cannabis business executives are male and 81 percent are white.

Thanks! I knew about Lincoln and Wilson, of course but not so much about Roosevelt.

My guess is that Glenn Beck and Dinesh D’Souza are the culprits who have everyone believing that the income tax, the Federal Reserve, and progressive politics began with Woodrow Wilson. This is not remotely accurate.

The current income tax as previously described began with the Teddy Roosevelt and William Howard Taft GOP administrations.. and in fact it didn’t require Wilson to do anything, it became Constitutional when Delaware ratified the 16th Amendment in 1913.

The Federal Reserve also began with legislation during Teddy Roosevelt’s administration... in response to the Panic of 1907 the National Monetary Commission was created to study how to modernize American banking... this was the Aldrich-Vreeland Act named for its two GOP sponsors...a modified version of the Monetary Commission’s study was signed into law by Wilson but it originated with TR and Taft.

Our first progressive era President was surely Republican Teddy Roosevelt, he even went on run for President on Progressive Party ticket in 1912 which split the GOP vote and gave the election to Woodrow Wilson.

There were many Republican progressives besides Teddy Roosevelt... Hiram Johnson, Robert La Follette among them.. plenty of them ended up in the administration of Teddy’s Democratic cousin Franklin Delano Roosevelt. People don’t know this history and clowns like Beck and Dinesh further mislead them.

Isn’t she supposedly Puerto Rican heritage - but born here.
Far as I’m concerned she’s an American dingbat trying to profit over her slightly darker skin. A pretend racist since she has a white boyfriend.

I’m hoping she’s a flash in the pan due to pissing off almost everyone with this NY/Amazon deal. Likely the next one after her will be a lot smarter.

Was TR’s party the first use of the term, “progressive” or did he co-opt it from somewhere?

The socialsh1ts - i mean socialists - demand colorblindedness while everything they do is based on their hyper-reaction to a person’s color or sexual bits.

prior to legalization in areas, the entire industry was run by minorities. Not that some airhead would understand that.

So Ocasio-Cortez wants people at the top of an industry based on the color of their skin.

How about studying, implementing and testing sales and marketing strategies to get to the top?

Ocasio-Cortez is another stupid, low-IQ racist.

“How much do folks want to bet that when Mugabe finally croaks...”

As we speak, Mugabe is getting the waterboard treatment by the incoming NEW dictatorship to reveal where he stashed the cash. Africa recycles stolen cash from one dictator to the next dictator. Mugabe will die broke.

Teddy Roosevelt and his allies were the first to use the name Progressive Party, in 1912.

They of course took the name from the larger progressive movement of which they were a part. They may have called themselves ‘conservative progressives’.

California was something of a center of Republican progressives and played a big role in creating the 1912 Progressive Party. The nucleus was their Lincoln-Roosevelt League.

The progressive movement was larger than just politics and developed in the post-Civil War era when the Republican Party dominated government and had a lock on the Presidency except for Bourbon Democrat Grover Cleveland’s two terms.

An interest in euthanasia developed in this era. Dig around some you will find that its early proponents were largely Republicans, Robert Ingersoll being example. And Margaret Sanger, who spent her last years as a prominent member of the Tucson Republican women. But I digress...

“the entire industry was run by minorities”

The weed industry on the west coast, from Vancouver to SLO has been under the dominant control of white men since forever.

SoCal was the domain of the cartels.

I don’t have a clue who had the top of the trade, points further east.

That is exactly how progs behave in real life. A basket of destruction. They do not know productivity or its importance. They are pure consumers. Like sharks in the ocean.

https://weedmaps.com/dispensaries/ohio-medical-marijuana-dispensary/about

Ohio’s Medical Marijuana “Business” is very expensive to get into.

ie: Applicants must also submit a $10,000 application fee and a certification of operation fee of $90,000 if awarded a license. Applicants must also pay a $100,000 renewal fee for each year. Applicants will be ranked using a numerical process system, and the Department may issue up to 40 processor licenses prior to September 9, 2018.
And the ‘dispensary’ costs are astronomical.
In order of applicants to apply for a license, they must have at least $250,000 in liquid assets to cover the application and operations costs. Ohio Medical Marijuana Dispensary owner applicants must pay a one-time, non refundable application fee of $5,000. If their application is approved, they will pay $70,000 every two years to maintain their license. If the annual payment is late, an additional $10,000 fee will be added. Dispensaries that relocate, undergo major renovations, or change in ownership will pay a fee of $5,000. Advertisements, which must be approved by the board, will cost $100 per ad. Certified employees identification cards will cost between $50 to $500. (All above fees are non-refundable)
