Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) earned praise from “drug justice” advocates after criticizing a growing marijuana legalization and business model that is paving the way for white male investors to reap major profits after minorities spent decades in prisons for selling pot.
She made her comments during a House Financial Services subcommittee hearing this week on banking services for the burgeoning cannabis industry as more states legalize the sale and use of marijuana.
She suggested the growing industry was “compounding the racial wealth gap” by allowing wealthy white-dominated companies to gain a quick advantage in the industry. She complained that communities most affected by drug incarcerations are the “last in the door” when it comes to profiting now from legalized cannabis.
The nonprofit Drug Policy Alliance praised her position. “We must legalize marijuana in a way that recognizes and repairs the disastrous, disproportionate harms of the drug war ... on people of color,” the organization tweeted after the hearing.
Ocasio-Cortez cited statistics from Colorado and Washington, where marijuana is legal for recreational use, that 73 percent of cannabis business executives are male and 81 percent are white.

I read an article some months ago that there are people in Oregon who invested heavily in growing operations only to face bankruptcy because they overestimated the market price of pot.
A bale of hay in my neck of the woods might weigh fifty pounds and cost ten bucks. That's twenty cents a pound. Even if it cost ten times as much to grow pot, that would still be just two dollars per pound. It's not a business I would get into.

AOC has a plan for the domestic folks, though - state ownership of the means of production. It's always worked in the past and has made Zimbabwe the agricultural powerhouse it now is.
This is the logical extension of Obama’s ‘you didn’t build that’ rhetoric.

When you consider Washington has an 81% white demographic and Colorado has an 87% white demographic, seems to me there are not enough white folks involved in the weed trade. Sure sounds discriminatory to me

The black population in CO and WA are 4.3% and 3.7% respectively. Whites are apparently underrepresented.
If she doesn’t want Amazon and she doesn’t want cannabis ... then what the hell kind of business enterprises DOES she want to see thriving in her district?
The formula for “privilege” is the same for everyone. Finish school, learn a skill or trade, don’t do drugs, and don’t have children out of wedlock. It’s not a guarantee, but has been true for generations. Race hustlers like AOC are pathetic.
Not just the past 30 years...before that Dems opposed women voting and before that they enforced Jim Crow with the KKK and before that they went to war to defend slavery and before that they force-marched native tribes off their lands.
I've heard stuff like this from some identifying as Puerto Rican before, and from the Hispanic activists crowd.
