India has great disparities when it comes to food access: while 194 million people go hungry to bed daily, another 30 million are battling obesity. And now, a new challenge has been added to the mix: climate change.
Rising temperatures, variable rainfall, extreme weather events and loss of agricultural land due to droughts and floods are impacting food production, availability and access around the world. A 2011 FAO report quotes research predicting a 20% increase in global child malnutrition, compared to a world not weighed down by the burden of climate change.
But what does climate change have to do with India staring at a possible obesity crisis?
Dr. Goenka says, Climate change will increase undernutrition through increased food insecurity from extreme weather events, droughts, and shifts in agriculture. Climate change also affects the prices of basic food commodities, especially fruits and vegetables, potentially increasing consumption of processed foods.
Since malnutrition goes hand in hand with climate change, bundling policy instruments to target both is the smart move.
The Lancet Commission identifies four major drivers of the syndemic: food and agriculture, transportation, urban design, and land use. Lets look at each of these drivers.

Aafrin Kidwai from the Weather Channel? LOL.
Wow, a climate change triple header today. CNN, the Guardian, and the Weather Channel (all proven colluders in the climate change joke) each had different disasters or problems associated with their lie of the decade.
Each article can be easily destroyed by a good (not even great) first year physics major.
The world population has never eaten as well as they have in the past 10 years.
That’s throughout thousands of years of History.
That’s probably going to change its global cooling sets in for real.
I don’t think so, farmers are innovative, we’ll come up with shorter season crops, higher yielding plats and even indoor farming. Just putting dark fabric on your beds can give you a couple extra weeks. It will just have to be worth the cost.
OK that make sense - now global warming is simultaneously making some people obese and others starve.
KInd of how ‘global warming’ is responsible for making the colder-than-normal winters.
Did they do a big focus section on how obese most black and latino women, and lesbians as a group, are, by demographic?
Because Id like to see them have a long honest discussion about that.
The latest study has proved that climate change actually caused the extinction on Unicorns.
At least they are stating a verifiable fact. I mean, fat people “do” produce more methane gas than skinny people. Yea?
""Gee, could it be my farts"?
Climate Change and AGW: The theory that explains every negative feature of the world. The theory that is impossible to falsify.
Exploring the Intricate Link between Climate Change and Money
Let me guess: too hot to exercise?
So I am obese because of anthropological global warming instead of simply eating too much. Good, it is all Prophet Gore’s fault!
If youre fat, blame it on climate change.
The things liberals blame on climate change appears to have no end in sight.
There may be something to this. Last time I saw Algore on TV, he looked like he had gained a few stones around the middle.
Obesity mostly has to do with processed food (which stimulates appetite) lack of excercise. Look at Americans and thier lifestyles in the 1980s and earlier.
I can only imagine how bad it will be when atmospheric concentration of CO2 surpasses 0.05%
Whatever happened to Phil Jones and the CRU of EAU
Fortunately the odds of reproducing fall dramatically the more obese or leftist someone becomes. Despite Michael Moore’s talent for separating leftists from their money he is a genetic dead end. The carbon footprint of his descendants is zero.
