Syria's Assad: U.S. will sell out those relying on it

BEIRUT, Feb 17 (Reuters) - Syrian President Bashar al-Assad warned on Sunday the United States would not protect those depending on it, in reference to Kurdish fighters who control much of the north.

"We say to those groups who are betting on the Americans, the Americans will not protect you," he said without naming them. "The Americans will put you in their pockets so you can be tools in the barter, and they have started with (it)."

U.S. President Donald Trump declared in December he would pull troops from Syria, raising more questions over the fate of Washington's Kurdish allies under the threat of Turkish attacks.

“Sadly, he may be right.”

There are so many scum in government, I really don't know whether he's right or not. We can't know, with certainty. I grew up believing the story of George Washington not being able to lie about chopping down the apocryphal cherry tree. Now I am willing to believe almost anything about the unethical, un-American actions of some we've put into office. I don't want to believe these things, but one would have to be delusional not to see that we have great problems.

You should believe Washington saying to stay away from foreign entanglements in his farewell speech. It was prescient then and now. Look where we are and how he was right.

Despite what Assad is, does, and has done, unfortunately he does have a point;
What does bother me is there will never be any recall or mention when previous government shut downs comparison impacts get reviewed over the impact they had. Of this;

Not dare refer to the most costly and disgraceful results from a “shutdown” that happened during Nixon’s presidency. Caused by the democrats refusal to stand by the Vietnamese effort to remain independent by refusing them air support and supplemental funding of arm supplies which would have prevented that loss and that humiliating disgraceful evacuation of our Saigon embassy.

Which quickly then resulted in a multitude of Vietnamese being slaughtered and the sacrifices of thousands of our armed forces paying with their 58,000 lives assisting them in their fight for freedom dishonored..

Well, comparing US withdrawal from Syria to Vietnam is a stretch.

He’s partially right. The GOC will protect the Kurds, not us. We’re out of the deep state game now. Time to buck up buttercups.

Historically speaking, he’s quite correct.

I recall a war, gee I cannot remember which one (/s/), where it was won militarily but the government needed monetary support to continue fighting insurgents. The dems cut the money and that country fell in 1975.

He’s right. In this, the United States is no different than other countries. It is always foolish for a country to rely on a distant power for its protection. Likewise, it is foolish for a power to guarantee it will defend other countries.

Thanks for the ping. But I think the article is wrong.

He will arm them and he will do what he can to pressure Turkey. Most of that pressure will come from interests in the region.

Assad is not different after this. The door is open for peace to be possible in the area surrounding Syria, but he will not abandon Iran or Hezbollah. With an understanding between Assad and Israel, things might improve. I see no signs of that.

Turkey may think they want to try Israel again. If they do, they will make a huge mistake.
