There was a Polish Govt in Exile. Jan Karski was one of their representatives, another “Righteous Gentile”. You are correct that they were “not in place” and didn’t have much power in Poland, but they could have said something as a policy. The Pope also could have done it too.
A very complicated and tragic story. No winners.

The Pope also could have done it too.Don't get me started on the Pope during the war, and looking the other way when the Ustashe were massacring hundreds of thousands in Croatia, or when "Father" Tiso was sending Slovak Jews to their deaths.

Warsaw 1945.
At least the Germans got the benefit of The Marshall Plan. What did Poland get after the war? Squat!
And Poland never stopped fighting the Nazis. They fought over the skies of Britain, at Monte Cassino, and throughout the rest of the European Theater. The Polish Underground fought both Nazi and Communist. Poles were responsible for decoding ENIGMA.
