It's not expensive when you use the salt from the city you just wiped out.

If you were a student of history, you would know that salting the fields was a common practice by civilizations after a war. It was to ensure that civilization you just destroyed could not rebuild because they could not grow food.

Its like killing all the men and boys, but taking the women and girls as concubines and future brides, because women had no power and complied or died. While little girls would grow up and comply.

As for Men and boys, the adult men will continue to fight for their freedom, and boys will grow up and get revenge. So if slave labor is not needed for labor, it is better to kill the men.. In the big picture women were worth more than men because they could be bred.
