Population of Australia, about 25 million. About 75% of those are adults, or ~ 18.75 million adults. Say 1.1 million licensed gun owners...
A bit less than 6% of the adult population.
Is my math off?
No, but working out exact numbers are problematic.
The problem is we don't know exactly how many people hold gun licences. ACIC (the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission) says it was 816,000 based on numbers provided to them by state and territory governments in 2016, but not all states and territories are known to have provided full data to ACIC (it's a new organisation and some of the state governments aren't particularly happy about its formation or its data security). So generally speaking, people talk about over a million as I have. I would say it's unlikely the number is as high as two million, but I think it's probably closer to that than one million.
So saying 'between 5 and 10%' might be more cautious, but personally I do think 'about 10%' is fair.
