Australia confiscated guns a couple of years ago so how did he happen to have one? Though not guilty of murder, could the authorities still charge him with possession of a firearm?

Self defense...right out of English Common Law.In Massachusetts (and in some other US states) one has a legal duty to flee a dangerous situation...even if it's in your own home.Here that guy would have done 5 years.
