Tribes Use Western and Indigenous Science to Prepare for Climate Change

Northwestern tribes and the University of Washington climate group have joined forces to help protect salmon, roots, trees, and other important resources.

Historically, snow from the Cascade and Blue mountains would melt slowly over months, releasing a flow of cold water that sustained salmon and other wildlife in the Columbia River. Today, there’s less snow, and the spring thaw is hitting earlier.

“I felt sickened by the death of these salmon,” says Don Sampson, climate change project manager for the Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians, a group of 57 tribes in six western states. The disaster will linger, he adds, hampering many future generations of salmon.

Climate change is altering many environmental factors - from the timing of spring runoff to water temperature to snowpack and glacier extent - that have dictated the abundance and behavior of salmon and other vital resources. Indigenous communities, many of which practice traditional harvesting and gathering, either for sustenance or as a cultural practice, are already seeing these changes and want to take action to protect the resources most important to them.

It’s a bit ironic that Western science is directing them to conduct forest thinning and prescribed burns because those tools had been practiced by tribes for millennia to cultivate spaces ideal for the plants they harvest and the animals they hunt. But as climate change and a century of poor forest management are inflaming catastrophic wildfires, Western scientists are increasingly recognizing the wisdom of this traditional practice.

FYI. There has been from 18 ft. to 24 ft. of snow that has fallen on Snoqualmie Pass this season so far, which is West of Seattle on Interstate 90. Snoqualmie Pass is home to a large ski resort.

Those figures are taken as different elevations.

Also, the Pass was closed to traffic for several days last week due to the heavy snow fall, which disrupted air traffic and supply because I90 is an important supply route, East to West.

Tell me this has NEVER happened before and the wildlife has never had a chance to adapt or live through it.

It has happened for millions of years but *this* time it's our fault. /s

There is a part of my little city that floods almost every year.

A small stream overflows from the snow melting.

Our Democrat county commissioners decided to finally take action.

And, of course, that required that they raise our taxes.

Their solution?

Deepen the streambed? No.

Build water containment areas? No.

Build dykes? No.

They hired a guy (probably a relative) to tell us that there could be flooding.

There’s some real Democrat problem solving there.

“Today, there’s less snow, and the spring thaw is hitting earlier”

Dying of laughter here.

45’ of snow in the Sierras and February is not yet over.

Seattle had snow last week and I would bet the Cascades are well over average. Big winter here, just like 2016-17.

So what’s this dips**t talking about? The “climate” is about the same as its ever been in the West.

The Injuns are just seeing a new shakedown scam to run on the Palefaces: let’s guilt trip them this time over a fake injury. Kinda like Jussie the Hoaxer!

Since climate hoax ... er, I mean climate change ... is just socialist voodoo anyway, it seems fitting that the deluded fools who believe in it would try to cure it using magic chicken bones and ritual dancing.

I don’t think so. I daresay that the savages have come on board in return for a share of the pork.

How many SUVs and cow farts, along with fracking caused the great 25 year drought in the 1300s that drove the Anazazi out of their dry canyons in the 4-Corners Area.

It had to be something WE did!

Central Texas was hit was a 40+ foot wall of flood water this past October. Several people lost their lives. Homes were demolished. A major bridge was wiped out. Thing is the water authority knew 2 weeks before that the rain and flooding was headed stream. Where the bridge was, and down stream, was an area where the water level has routinely been raised or lowered by dam operations. But the morons did NOTHING to lower the water level so the flooding wouldn’t have been so bad. AFTER the flood subsided, it took them mere hours to lower the water by 7 ft. and have kept it down for a couple of months - for repairs. Blood is on their hands for their incompetence.

The max. river depth is 60 feet and I’ve seen the level lowered to where there’s nothing but a little stream. So low that you can walk across (btdt). But, they did NOTHING back in October but sit in their little cubicles down in uber liberal Austin and twiddle their thumbs thinking of new ways to tax and new regulations on everyone but themselves.

From Google search

Columbia River Salmon Run Salmon Range. ... Historically, salmon runs in the Columbia River Basin consisted of 16% fall chinook, 12% spring chinook, 30% summer chinook, 11% coho, 23% sockeye, 8% steelhead, and less than 1% chum. These runs generally extended from March through October, though steelhead runs extended through the winter. Columbia River Salmon, Pacific Northwest |

Seems like some kind of salmon is running from March through October!

Yep.

There’s a lady FReeper near Houston who hates me because I said Houston’s Democrat mayor was an idiot.

Instead of focusing on things he could AND SHOULD affect, he was busy campaigning for National office and blathering on about national issues.

People don’t understand that the concept of Opportunity Costs isn’t just about money.

Opportunity Costs can also include time and effort and many other things.

If local Democrat politicians spend their time, money and energy yammering about issues that they have no control over, then that is time, money and effort that could have been spent on issues they do have some control over.

And their failure to address the issues that they can affect, can have extremely damaging consequences.

And they should be held accountable for failing to do their job.

EARTH COOL DOWN CAUSED BY SOLAR INACTIVITY
WARNS GEO SCIENTIST
RESULTS FROM STUDY OF SALMON FISH REDUCTION

Scientific reports from Canada and Greenland has indicated that the the shrinking arctic ice sheets have begun to replace themselves rapidly. Strongly suggesting the earth instead of warming, is beginning to cool down. It is still not known (or proven) if this is the result because of the reduced rate of sun spot activity.

Canadian geo scientist Professor R. Timothy Patterson of Carelton University is urging a go-slow on the rush for governments to “Play God” with global warming legislative blaming this on CO2 (carbon dioxide) discharges. Legislating corrections attempting to control a natural cyclic occurrence caused by; sun spots, the magnetic solar wind, and cyclic earth magnetic polarity reversal, among other natural occurrences including volcanism, meteors etc. Probably plays a very significant role in climate change. Yet ignorantly blaming man made CO2 emissions for climatic change. which is becoming a rapidly discredited and minuscule cause of global warming in his article published by Canada’s Financial Post. 6/20/07

Patterson was selected by the Canadian government to study the fluctuations in certain types of fish populations.
While doing so the Canadian Geo-Scientist found a correlation when certain species of fish had high population and then drastic drop offs. He discovered these fluctuations corresponded with sun spot activity and solar radiation vs cosmic activity. When earth cooling occurred.

Studying deep fjords along the Western Canadian coast where deep pools of low oxidation water exist. The Patterson study reached deep into the earths recent past of 4000 years of undisturbed sediments. Patterson found that when aquatic activity was highest and lowest in those collected sediments having high aquatic content had matched known solar protection when the magnetic wind was highest, and dropped off when earth magnetic fields activities were lowest. Thus causing cosmic radiation to intensify.

Then because the earth became unprotected by its magnetic fields from galactic cosmic activity. Patterson cites several accepted theories which concludes this then created cloud activity during such periods which increased drastically. Thus cooling earth and bringing in its ice ages.

In his presentation here is a professor urging more scientific study (like Pope Benedict)is needed. That politicians including Al Gore, of The Earth Is Flat Society, don’t know what the hell they’re talking about. Strongly suggesting that the global warming may be caused by exhaling politicos rather than serious scientific examination.

Patterson seems to be saying before Canadians start investing in palm trees they should be considering better parkas because what goes up must come down and the Mexicans better move over for a reverse population flow. The story was featured in The Drudge Report, and World Net Daily, which were linked in The US Mat’s last page. But lost due to source link changes . http://www.theusmat.com/index.htm
