New York officials face backlash over 'congestion' tax push

New York City is expensive. From parking to hotels to Broadway tickets, the city has a way of leaving the wallet lighter for any visitor. But it’s poised to get even pricier if a controversial new “congestion” fee comes to fruition.

With Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s backing, the proposed charge would be imposed at all Manhattan points of entry below 60th Street. While the price has not been set in stone, a report commissioned by Cuomo’s office recommends cars entering Manhattan during peak hours be charged $11.52, and trucks be charged $25.34 – on top of any bridge tolls.

New York City Councilman Barry Grodenchik, a Democrat representing part of Queens, worried about the impact to his constituents, many of whom rely on cars to get into Manhattan.

Leading opponent Richard Brodsky, a former Democratic assemblyman, told The New York Times last year, “This has always been a policy nostrum of the elites, sort of a big lab test in which the lab rats — the regular people — wanted no part of it.”

Supporters counter that the plan can work, and is sorely needed.

A spokesman for New York state Democratic Sen. Liz Kruger, who represents Manhattan’s east side and supports the plan, told Fox News the senator remains optimistic and “the devil is in the details.” Kruger thinks there is “a model that can be found that is equitable to all New Yorkers,” the spokesman said.

There is no way the non-white underclass in NYC was ever going to tolerate this.

Cool...a “virtual wall”.

The Democrats poo poo when Republicans accuse them of “All they can do is tax and spend” and then turn around and just do that.

Businesses need to begin pulling out of NYC.

They are bitching about losing Amazon and then turn around and try to ram this through again.

The answer to everything with liberals is to raise taxes and fees.

Wonder how this is going to go with the trucking industry. Already, the industry is facing a shortage of drivers, and things like the Electronic Log Devices are pissing them off more. Pretty soon, some companies are just going to discontinue delivering products into places NYC and CA altogether.

Think of all the specialty shops and restaurants that rely on food coming in from outside the city. So, they're going to raise their prices even more.

I'm so glad I live out in the country.

Getting in and out of Manhattan from 4-730 is just nuts. I’ve had trips from Midtown to LGA take over 2.5 hours. I unfortunately have to visit NYC about 10-15x a year for work.

If this goes through, I would like to see NJ charge NY vehicles a $20 daily surcharge to use the NJ Turnpike or the Garden State Parkway.

Never been to NY and no desire to go.

Been there a couple times, the last a few days after 9/11 .. no intention of ever going back.

Numerous individual exceptions notwithstanding, NYC is as much a nest of sedition today as it was during the Revolutionary era.

The rich live above 60 st. The middle class will suffer because they live below 60 street.
When a cab or uber cross 60 street will the passenger have to pay that congestion fee?
Why did he pick 60 street as the cut off street? Does it have anything to do with the location of Trump Towers? What a unique way to keep track when that family comes to town.

The city has reached the point where the only way to increase revenue is to lower taxes. Just try convincing the libs of that.
