Collins' lawyers to N.Y. prosecutors: None of your business
Buffalo News ^ | Jerry Zremski

Rep. Chris Collins' lawyers appear to be honing a new argument to press against the federal prosecutors in New York who charged the Republican lawmaker from Clarence with insider trading: It's none of your business. That's the key new message underlying a host of legal documents the Collins defense team filed in federal court in Manhattan earlier this month. Why, the Collins defense team appears to be asking, is Collins being prosecuted in U.S. District Court in the Southern District of New York for an alleged violation – launching a series of insider stock trades – that supposedly started with a phone call the congressman made from White House lawn in the nation's capital?...(snip)

...The congressman has long vowed to fight the charges in court, and in the new legal papers, his lawyers repeat a point they have been making since the start of the case: that he didn't sell any of his Innate stock at the time and therefore didn't benefit from any alleged insider trading scheme. "The indictment fails to allege the nature of any personal benefit that Rep. Collins expected to receive from the alleged actions," the Collins lawyers said...

It took courage to back him up very early on.

I didn’t know this guy did.

i know Rudy did and I’m sure there were others but his name is prominent so it’s the one I saw the most.

My inside anonymous source is aware of the problem in SDNY and indicates that it will be handled at the appropriate time.

That would have been a couple of years ago....

You want to do it legally? Would any big city jury convict Hillary of anything? Trey Gowdy referred to “tribunals” this morning. Takes time to set those up and make them acceptable.

If they’re so worried about insider trading, shouldn’t pretty much EVERY member of Congress get indicted?

"the first sitting rep to endorse"

Ah, that explains a lot. Another state prosecution in NY for 'pardon protection'.

Those f'ing bastards...

In addition to being the first representative to endorse Trump (at a time when it took real courage), Collins comes from the most Republican district in NY.

Cuomo explicitly announced his intention to drive conservatives from NY, and this is part of it. Cuomo wants conservatives to feel unwelcomed, using any phony tactic he can.

How so?

Do you even know what “insider trading” is?

:: Rep Chris Collins was “the first sitting rep to endorse” our fearless President, DJT ::

Having done that, Collins defaulted to the same old derp practices and leveraged his knowledge to make a buck, making him no better than Barney Frank.

Good riddance to stinky rubbish.

Congress absolved themselves from “insider trading” laws.

Actually I think I do. Is it when someone is able to profit from trading stocks, etc with knowledge not known the to the general public. Is it some thing like that? Is that a simplified explanation. So, when a member of Congress, who takes office with no more worth than the average person, leaves a multi-millionaire, but has cast votes on things that would benefit his/her portfolio.

And, I think most folks find it a bit hard to believe that Harry Reid, who was just a normal guy, leaves a multi-millionaire that it gives people something to think about. Obviously, not something you think about.

But the did pass a law that supposedly banned the practice

The Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge Act is an Act of Congress designed to combat insider trading. It was signed into law by President Barack Obama on April 4, 2012. The bill prohibits the use of non-public information for private profit, including insider trading by members of Congress and other government employees. It confirms changes to the Commodity Exchange Act, specifies reporting intervals for financial transactions.

And then there’s this...

Good for him. DOJs- state and federal are clearly out of control because of a lack of effective accountability to the public. Politicians won’t intervene during an active investigation. Prosecutors routinely use intimidation tactics against witnesses and juries. Investigators lie to targets and witness, use parallel construction, spy w/o warrants, suborn witness perjury when it suits them. Prosecutors and investigators are almost never sanction let alone prosecuted for their egregious abuses. Just look at Andrew Weismann- he got promoted for withholding exculpatory evidence.

We have got to start educating the public on DOJ corruption. We need support from politicians and jury nullification.

By overstepping their authority, DOJs are engaging in destabilizing activity that could provider yet another trigger for violence and a civil war.

“So, when a member of Congress, who takes office with no more worth than the average person, leaves a multi-millionaire, but has cast votes on things that would benefit his/her portfolio.’

If the congressman makes his case on that basis, good for him. Why, because then ordinary citizens can make the case that they should receive the same treatment under the 14th amendment.

It’s not that I oppose prosecution against insider trading, it’s that I oppose the corruption at most DOJs. Because the DOJs have become unaccountable, they do not deserve the respect and the trust of the public. Until we see real reform and adherence to constitutional protections for defendants we must oppose DOJs especially when it comes to non-violent crimes. We need to see the likes of Andrew Weismann in solitary confinement. More prosecutors and investigators need to be prosecuted, sanctioned and fired for abusing citizen’s rights. We need to stop giving deference and prestige to these people.
