I know immigrants, now US citizens, who have been in this country over 40 years, who speak almost no English, and basically get by speaking Portuguese.
I find their lack of assimilation disturbing. It’s not about racism — Portugal is a Western European country. But if you don’t want to join American culture, why are you here?

Because poor people in the United States would be considered upper middle class almost everywhere else?
I do not know what percent of them are sending money home to bank accounts. By doing such, they are earning money for their future. These banks are earning them good interest rates. Imagine having $100,000 in an Ecuador bank. You could go back to Ecuador and live quite comfortably at a young age. Once the money runs out, you could draw U.S. Social Security. One of those checks every month would put you in fat city for the rest of your life. That’s the ticket!
