Santorum: Trump's decision to side with Kim on Otto Warmbier was 'reprehensible'

President Donald Trump's decision not to hold North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un responsible for Otto Warmbier's death was "reprehensible," former Republican Sen. Rick Santorum said Thursday.

"This is the conundrum of Donald Trump for many of us who like his policies and don't like a lot of the things he does and says," Santorum said of the decision to CNN's John Berman on "New Day."

"But, this is reprehensible, what he just did. He gave cover, as you said, to a leader who knew very well what was going on with Otto Warmbier," Santorum, who is a CNN political commentator, said. "And again, I don't understand why the President does this. I am disappointed, to say the least, that he did it."

Earlier Thursday, Trump, who was in Hanoi for a summit with Kim, said the North Korean leader "felt badly about it. He felt very badly," telling reporters the two discussed the matter privately. "He tells me that he didn't know about it and I will take him at his word."

I do not think Santorum is correct.

I saw the news conference.

Trump stated he would take Kim at his word that he was unaware.

If Santorum can’t understand what that means or understand Trump’s answer, Santorum is slow - or he’s showboating.

Breaking news: CNN has found something to fault Trump on.

If he had said something different, it would be seen as poor diplomacy, busting the hoped-for nuke agreement.

If he had agreed to some semi-sham proposed by Kim, he would have been pilloried for being weak, and trying to make an agreement so he’d look good (maybe Madeline Albright would be used as the commentator or reference!).

Probably some Realpolitik going on. If they say Kim was responsible, it blows up any other attempts at diplomacy.

What was done to Otto was horrific. If, however, it is possible that Lil Kim was unaware of it. Unless Santorum has proof of some kind, then he should stay out of it.

What would holding Kim accountable look like? People throw words around without thinking....condemning Trump for dealing with a tyrant, for instance. If he wants to denuke NK and bring some relief for everyone, who the heck is he supposed to deal with?

Would Rick rather have Trump start an all out nuclear war with Kim over this?

I'll bet there is a note, somewhere in Foggy Bottom, that says to not call Norks liars, at least until you get home.

Suddenly, CNN wants to call a politician a liar? I could name any number of liars who are a lot closer to CNN.

These GOP talking heads hired by the leftist media always evolve into saying exactly what their leftist paymasters want them to say.

As the Lord said, “you cannot serve two masters.”

Santorum's political career can be best summed up as: he was elected because he wasn't as bad as the other guy.

Exactly! Trump is buttering the little dictator up. The Kim has a huge ego, and you can’t start accusing him of stuff if you want to get anywhere. Santorum is an idiot.

It’s tragic and criminal what happened to Warmbeer, but he would still be alive now had he avoided NK in the first place. He had no business being there.

This from a guy who lost his re-election bid in the Senate by a whopping 17%.

I voted for Santorum, even contributed money.

But lately, he’s become a real jag-off.

What would Rick Sanatorium know about it?

What a LOSER! Man of ZERO credibility, endorsing Arlen Specter, the leftist traitor. Lost ALL respect for him when he caved to pressure to support him.

Trump got Otto out of Korea early in his Presidency. Santorium has done nothing of note.
