A great example of rent-control would be soviet-bloc housing, which was substandard, communal, very small space and virtually zero privacy. The only ones with decent housing in the soviet union were party elites. In socialistic, communistic or dictatorships the only ones who enjoy a decent standard of living are those who rule - everyone else is at the mercy of the elites in those systems.
