Could it be that Facebook is turning into social media's retirement home? Although that question might seem a little bit far-fetched, young people are leaving the social network in droves while increasing numbers of over-55s are signing up. In general, Facebook is struggling to retain its user base and today the social network has an estimated 15 million fewer users in the U.S. than it did in 2017. That's according to data released on Wednesday by Edison Research which shows that 67% of the population aged over 12 used Facebook in 2017, a figure that stands at 61% today.
Young people are at the center of the exodus while increasing numbers of over-55s are signing up. Back in 2017, Edison Research found that 79% of the coveted 12 to 34-year -old demographic used Facebook and that share now fallen to 62%. The user share in the 35-54 age bracket stood at 72% in 2017 and that fell to 69% in 2018 and remained that way in 2019. The data also shows that the share of people aged 55+ using Facebook grew from 49% to 53% between 2017 and 2019. No wonder all those teenagers were complaining about friend requests from parents, aunts and uncles.

Hey, hey, I have been educated!
I did not know that.
FogeyBook:
I predict that in ten years FB will be so out of style as to be considered dead.
A person can create a new account under a different name and see what the young ones are up to.
Of course, depends on the privacy settings how much you can see.
As for older people using FB. Yes, they do and I think it has to do with families living far apart and of course they enjoy seeing pictures of their loved ones, too. It helps those who have recently lost a spouse as their friends are also on FB. I don’t see them getting involved in the newsfeeds/political crap that goes on however there are some who are heavily involved in it but are much younger.

I have 3 kids. 24, 22, 20. None have ever had a Facebook account.
Instagram and Snapchat.
I have four kids ages 15-20. Same thing, Instagram and Snapchat. Both are terrible in my opinion. Facebook was awful 2 years ago during the election but I have muted those people. I mostly follow twitter now and a few groups on Facebook. In fact I go weeks without checking Facebook. I’m hoping for a replacement to twitter.
Hmmmmmmm.....is Facebook still charging advertisers rates based on 2017 user numbers?
That could get them into trouble.
AND THIS---Facebook recently disabled a billion faked accounts.
Did Facebook misrepresent itself to advertisers
so that it could charge more for ads. This is a criminal offense.
REFERENCE A couple of newspapermen were jailed b/c they
cooked the books WRT readership to charge more for ads.

Never had a page, and deleted the app on my devices I used to see my wifes page (with her permission).
Facebook has devolved into shared memes, political rants, narcissistic artificial nonsense, and a place for crazy people to show the world how nuts they are.
THIS is the real reason people are leaving.
On Star Trek TNG, there is a race of LIQUID beings, who all know what each other knows when they all get together in one place..................
Number of years ago an older friend (I didn’t know at the time he had a cancer that would eventually kill him) told me “I’m buying my last car”.
It was a Saab.
They both departed about the same time.
I remember when Instant Messenger on AOL first came out. It was ‘the thing’ everybody was in to....................
Saab was a good car.
Their unions killed it..................
I don't think Zuckerberg was ever anything other than the media face for Facebook. Google and Facebook are both data harvesting operations that started at two colleges that have been taken over by the CIA, Harvard and Stanford. Unibomber? Harvard student that was mind-screwed by the CIA during their MKUltra ops. CIA runs an internship program at Stanford.
LSD and psychogenics were developed at left coast colleges. It's all a lie.
Hey, if it helps to keep tabs on older relatives, then cool. I’d rather Facebook just be a “retirement home”.
The only time I use it is when I want to send my mom a quick note that doesn’t require a phone call, especially since my dad doesn’t use computers at all, and doesn’t do phone calls if he can avoid it.
“It was kind of fun in 2008 & 2009.”
It was! Being able to find and connect with old friends and seldom seen relatives was really nice.
Back then there was little to no politics, and people were at least a bit more shy about dumping their whole lives out there. Not to mention that mobile devices were not as prevalent or cheap, so all of the unstable trash that have access to the internet today were not there to turn it into a dumpster fire it is now.
Yes, but Instagram doesn’t interface with Facebook at all from a users perspective. The functionality of each “App” is similar, but they can be used exclusively of the other. All the kids use Instagram for their “Stories” and Pics. None of them are on FB
