The Black Gun Owner Next Door (Must Read)
NY Times ^ | 03-10-2019 | Tiya Miles

Posted on 03/10/2019 8:49:45 AM PDT by NRx

...The ruddy bricks, green shutters and white curtains were just as I remembered them. But here was something new — a red, white and blue sticker on the windowpane trumpeting the National Rifle Association.

...My response to seeing the sticker was strong. I am an African-American historian and, on the matter of guns and most other political issues, decidedly liberal. To me, the pairing of Lewis Hayden and the N.R.A. felt like an affront.

...Some identify as “gun-comfortable,” like the political scientist Jason Johnson, who attended the 2017 N.R.A. convention and concluded at The Root.com that the event stoked “white fear of imaginary terrorists, black thugs and immigrants.” Others are “super assertively pro-gun,” like Maj Toure, founder of Black Guns Matter. Mr. Toure is a member of the N.R.A., and he told me in a phone interview that there are many more black members who will speak of their involvement only in “hushed tones.” While he is critical of the N.R.A. for not doing more for urban Americans, he sees the group as an important civil rights organization.

In 2015, Philip Smith founded the National African-American Gun Association in Georgia. His members, he said, are predominantly first-time gun owners and educated professionals, “engineers, doctors, state workers, federal workers, stay-at-home moms.” While he has close ties to the N.R.A., Mr. Smith’s goal was to build a black association that was “self-governed, self-maintained, self-driven.” Today, Mr. Smith said, the N.A.A.G.A. has 75 chapters in 30 states. He expects to be in every state within a year.

A lefty moonbat discovers the right to keep and bear arms as a bulwark against tyranny. More than a little shocked that the NY Times would publish this.

Gun control laws were enacted by southern democrats after Reconstruction to prevent freed slaves from defending themselves from the KKK enforcement wing of the democrat party.

Black gun owners are not a monolith, Mr. Smith stresses. “We have black Republicans, Democrats, gay, straight.” In what may come as a surprise to some, black women make up 60 percent of the association’s membership, according to the group. Women are the ones “driving our organization, driving gun sales,” he said. Even black gun owners preparing for natural or human-made disasters (“preppers”), which he estimates make up about 5 to 10 percent of N.A.A.G.A.’s membership, are growing in visibility.

I've been told by acquaintances that black communities which often don't embrace the police have a desire to be able to defend themselves from their criminal element. A concern that's expressed is that laws that would take guns away for youthful (or not so youthful) indiscretions would take guns away from a lot of now law-abiding citizens.

Lefty-Moonbat needs to realize that the color of a person’s skin is NOT the most important thing; the most important thing is that person’s RIGHT TO LIVE and PROTECT their own life.

I was equally surprised that an article in the Times would allow a quote from the very terrible & very juvenile the root .com.

They need guns to protect them from the brotha’s they dated.

I know some women in projects.

One guy said if his ex ever got pregnant again he’d skin her alive.

One just raped his girlfriend over and over and that’s not why she left. He put a knife through her hand.

One molested a woman’s kid and she found out.

Finding a good man in those neighborhoods is like finding an honest politician.

I thought ‘black gun’ was referring to the firearms in the article!

Some were. Some (Texas) were enacted by military governors in the South after the Civil War.

In Texas, anti-gun laws were enacted by the Reconstruction government to protect itself from Texans.

In the nine houses around mine, there are three black families, and at least two have firearms. One’s a cop, and the other is an old Georgia former farmer, now dump truck fleet owner. I’m not so sure about the third, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he had one hidden away somewhere. He’s a retired engineer.

The only people surprised about blacks owning guns are the same ones who are surprised about anyone owning guns.

That’s an old wives’ tale. The NRA was founded to help former Union soldiers shoot better. Many of them couldn’t hit the side of a barn.

I figured a way for a small grant of say, 50k, to equip a black suburbia with enough arms to in effect replace or better the security they could get from 3-6 police officers.

For about $250 each, .22 pistols and ammo, engraving and ballistic testing, and an hour of training could provide 200 loaded “loaner” guns.

Maybe 1 out of 4 households would want a gun, and not have a resident felon. This would provide random coverage to 800-1000 homes.

Each gun would be engraved that it was the property of the organization, so it could be traceable if lost or stolen.

I had a close A-A friend from elementary school through high school; his mother worked for the county. Her job brought her in contact with a lot of persons “in need of services.”

She carried a pistol in her purse at all times. She never had no problems. Lived into her 90s.

Without regard to race or ethnicity, the democrat party, when in the majority, is a threat to all citizen’s 2A rights.

It’s too bad the NY Slimes thinks so much of itself, and the crap they print, that they require you to have a subscription to read their garbage.
