Perhaps it was difficult to understand. The point is that Islam is not the only threat or impediment to the life of a Christian. Secularism, abortion, drug addiction, and porneia are all mortal threats (they separate the soul from God), and yet one should recognize it is a mortal sin to gun down any of those adherents. It was also a mortal sin to murder those Moslems in the mosque. If one cannot recognize that, one is truly lost.
