Some truth but a lot of half-truths in the article, kind of like having some lion pee in the well.

For solid information about Lent see:

One point of interest: the Roman government did not care in the slightest if someone worshiped Christ or not.

NOT worshipping the Roman Gods (including the emperor) was, however, treason, as the foundational principle of both Republic and Empire was that its greatness was a result of the favor of the gods as a reward for piety.

Jews were the sole exception in not having to worship the Gods or emperor, because above all else the Romans respected antiquity, and Judaism was OLD. Jews were given a special status wherein they could pray to their GOD *for* the Emperor and Republic. This is why the question of ‘are Christians Jews’ was crucial; if they WERE, then one law applied, if they were not Jews, then to NOT perform the scarifices expected of everyone was tantamount to calling down the wrath of the gods on everyone, ‘treason’.

Many times Christians were given a chance to make a small, token sacrifice to the gods, if they did, they were let go.

And no sooner the persecution of Christians ended that persecution of everybody else began.
It’s just a fact.
