There’s a Larger Lie Beyond the College Admissions Bribery Case
Time ^ | March 14, 2019 | Bryan Caplan

Posted on 03/15/2019 6:12:15 AM PDT by C19fan

The FBI charged a list of well-heeled parents, including actors Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin, with fraud on March 12. Their alleged goal: to get their kids into top schools, including Yale and Stanford. The public reactions ranged from outrage to cynicism. The outrage: These parents think they can buy their kids anything. The cynicism: These parents could have done the same thing legally by “charitably” funding a new building or two. All this aside, the admissions scandal is an opportunity to separate the lofty mythology of college from the sordid reality. Despite the grand aspirations that students avow on their admission essays, their overriding goal is not enlightenment, but status.

Is there a single institution in this country that has any integrity?

Buckeye's timely post in #5 happens to comment on your #4.

In essence, the Left who is determined to dismantle and remake America is beyond delighted that you ask the question.

Also, let's not imagine that this scandal has not been going on for decades. I only hope they take the investigation to its logical conclusion, viz. to indict and implicate people in high ranking positions for profiting off fraudulent credentials.

Let's start with every federal judge put in place by liberal presidents.

Nancy Pelosi was in a position to use more subtle methods than simple bribery.

Buildings cost a lot more. These parents didn’t want to own the place, they just wanted their n’er-do-well kids out of the house.

>> As an aside, I’m actually curious that I haven’t seen anything about the actual arrest charges involved.

For public universities, I would expect something like Bribery of a Public Official, but what about private schools? Would that actually be a crime?

The most nasty, filthy, disgusting scumbags here are not the wealthy parents. It's the corrupt and incorrigible university administrations and personnel marketing unearned credentials.

It is not as if this is the worst area in which these administrations have betrayed the ideals that the educational institutions claim to uphold. It is that the rot has gotten so deep and so widespread that it can't be hidden anymore.

Did a bunch of over-moneyed celebutards buy credentials for their kids of course. But everything is for sale at the universities from unearned degrees to predetermined result research to professorial credentials for manufactured political candidates.

Don't focus on the bit players.

Lawyers in New Jersey are very upset. The cost of a judicial appointment used to be a flat $50,000 donation to the party in power. Now the cost has skyrocketed.

...Is there a single institution in this country that has any integrity?

No
There isn’t
The larger the group of persons,
The less it is able to Love and Care
This is just as true of Government, Labor Unions, Corporations, Large Churches
They cease to be able to love, and subsequently, all Virtues fail

Only small groups, say less than 200
Are able to morally act, as a unit, even toward each other

There is no exception to this rule

***************

That’s a fair question to ask. We know beyond any shadow of doubt that our politicians lie to us incessantly. If their lips are moving they are lying to us.

Our two tiered legal system professes blindness under the law but we all know that is simply not true. Moreover, the courts are blatently political, driven by ideological views and harboring resentment for those who oppose their views.

In the business world lies and false representation are a mainstay of selling products. We see it so much we don’t even think about it anymore.

The point is our political, legal and economic institutions have become corrupt to a dangerous degree. Now there’s little question that our educational system is infested with integrity problems, to put it mildly.

I have never attended Hillsdale College but I did live in Hillsdale, Michigan for a time. And while it is several cuts above as an institution, from talking with locals I can tell you it is not squeaky-clean.

Most definitely! I attended a luncheon hosted by Hillsdale and had the opportunity to meet Dr. Larry Arnn. The room was full of alumni and prospective students, along with many generous benefactors. Dr Arnn’s speech detailing Hillsdale’s vision for education was truly inspiring. Hillsdale is a gift to America.

How many politicians are on the list of the "well-heeled parents"?
I suspect this is pretty much standard operating procedure among the Washington elite.
But they pick an actress who plays wholesome roles, so they can say "Hey, you're not so squeaky clean! Hah!"
