Trump stamps veto on 'reckless' attempt to stop wall construction
The Washington Times ^ | March 15, 2019 | Stephen Dinan

Posted on 03/15/2019 1:11:36 PM PDT by jazusamo

President Trump flexed his veto for the first time in his administration Friday, rejecting Congress‘ attempt to end his border emergency declaration and halt wall construction.

Surrounded by “angel moms” who have lost children to illegal immigrant violence, Mr. Trump called the attempt to stop wall construction “reckless” and “dangerous.”

“Today I am vetoing this resolution. Congress has the freedom to pass this resolution and I have the duty to veto it,” he said.

He was moving with striking speed, rejecting the legislation just a day after it cleared the Senate on a 59-41 vote. It had previously cleared the House 245-182.

Now Congress will get a chance to overturn his veto, but the strong backing Mr. Trump got from Republicans suggests he has enough support in either chamber to sustain him.

As he announced his veto, Mr. Trump described the dire border situation he said spurred him last month to declare an emergency and to claim $3.6 billion in Pentagon construction money to be used for wall-building.

“People hate the word invasion, but that’s what it is,” he said.

In addition to the mothers, Mr. Trump was accompanied by Vice President Mike Pence, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and new Attorney General William Barr.

Mr. Barr said the president’s emergency declaration is “solidly grounded in law,” while Mr. Pence said it kept faith with voters.

“You’re keeping your word by vetoing this legislation,” the vice president told him.

Democrats hope to sway Republicans to oppose Mr. Trump before an override attempt.

My gut feeling is some of the repub senators were allowed to vote YES because the Veto is solid without the dirty dozen.

It may help them get re-elected in their states by taking fire away from media.

With every passing day, I feel more embarrassed that I ever voted for John McCain in 2008 and Mittens Romney in 2012. My gorge rises at the thought.

tumps declaration is active till he or a joint resolution terminates it. specifically 6 months, I don’t know. If the dems make it an election issue, I would think it would cost them. They angel moms have to be behind trump and they’re plight is hard to deny, except for some democrats. Let schemer lead the party on that and Russia-Russia-Russia

They can try to terminate it every six months. Just more Democrat grandstanding.

Which will face the same fate as this attempt to overturn it.

See you then Chuck U.

Republicans who voted against, are ones who have not liked Trump from day one. and it was an anti Trump vote, so not to give him a victory.

Media thinks it will go badly for those who voted FOR, come 2020. Where are their senses? They are not correct... it’s the repubs who voted against that are in trouble.

There was NO reason to vote against this, except for political reasons.. bias.... they voted for and helped obama more than they have Trump ... and that does not bode well for them. No reason to make a big deal out of a veto...it’s been done numerous times before. Again, it’s bias against!

What are they going to do when the hammer starts to fall on hillary and obama and lynch... and they could not find anything on Trump... it’s gonna’ be rebellion on that side.

Thank YOU President Trump!

This is/has been a invasion. President Trump gets it!

Extermination of these invaders is what this will ultimately come to.

So democrats were able to get 59 total votes. They need 66 or 67 to over ride the veto. Which 7 republicans will accept a bribe or fold to blackmail to help the democrats over ride the veto?

Probably the same time limit as any other bill, the end of the Congress in 2020.

Has anyone figured out the costs of all of the previous “National Emergencies”? Especially, since most of them dealt with international issues?

Its DOA in the House. Democrats need like 45 GOP votes to override the veto.

Ain’t gonna happen.

When Congress makes a dumb move, the presidential veto is there to save them from themselves.

59 in the Senate voted against it! One more and it would be an override. Why is it Democrats exploit their slim majority in the house to do all sorts of liberal/socialist deeds but the Republicans in the Senate won’t use their majority to do the right thing? The American people KNOW there is a crisis on the Southern border and we demand that Congress fix it!

No they’d need 8 more in the Senate.

It will never get that far. The House will sustain the veto.

Then it’s 2/3 of the House and then 2/3 of the Senate to over ride? Sounds solid then. Good. Start the construction. I already offered my old Seabee skills to the President in an email. Still waiting for a response. Build it high, build it thick and build it long!

I wish he’d mentioned the senators that sided with the dems.

‘Two of them from Utah??? Send the illegals there.’

Sounds like a good plan. Send the illegals there with a one way ticket, $10 and a promised to force them to walk back to Mexico if they try to leave that state.

I agree...The GOP voting for the resolution, even in the House were voting against President Trump.

My GOP Congresswoman Herrera-Beutler was a Never Trumper from the start, she wrote in Paul Ryan for Pres in the general election and voted for this resolution the other day. Pathetic.
