Although Drug dollars might be at play (almost all of these career politicians are 'bought and paid for'), I think the over riding issue driving this lunacy is that most of the Government overlords don't want Nations to exist. The EU has pretty much destroyed the National borders on that continent (hurray for Hungary and Poland for trying to fight back) and the same bureaucrats want to do the same to the USA. They don't want to see the USA exist as a sovereign Nation.
