The number of young Turks who defined themselves as being religious or conservative has decreased by roughly 50 percent in the last 10 years, according to a survey by leading polling company KONDA.
The KONDA survey focusing on the lifestyles of 15-29 year old found that young people who define them as religious or conservative dropped to 15 percent from 28 percent within the decade, independent news site T24 reported on Saturday.
There has been an increase in the number of people who are single in the aforementioned age bracket, with 75 percent reporting they are single as compared to 60 percent 10 years ago. Accordingly, 19 percent are married, compared to 39 percent aged 15-29 a decade ago.
Turkey has witnessed a dramatic drop in youth reading newspapers, the KONDA survey found, with only 22 percent reading the countrys dailies, compared to 72 percent in 2008.
A larger percentage of young people in the country own cell phones and computers compared to 10 years ago, according to the survey, which found 100 percent owning cell phones in 2018, compared to 90 percent 2008 and 70 percent owning computers compared to 42 percent a decade ago.
There is large slide in the percentage of young people who believe political parties should be shut down when necessary or that the military should takeover if required, with 40 percent maintaining party closure is necessary in 2018 compared to 54 percent in 2008 and 22 percent believing in the necessity of a military takeover compared to 51 percent in 2008.
The survey also highlighted a slide in the number of young Turks who pray or fast, as required by the Islamic faith.
While 74 percent of those aged 15-29 said they fasted regularly during month of Ramadan in 2008, this figure dropped to 58 percent in 2018, KONDA found.
Meanwhile, the percentage of those who prayed regularly dropped from 27 to 24 percent in the past 10 years, according to the survey.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğans ruling Islamist Justice and Development Party (AKP) has increasingly promoted religion in its 17 years in power.
Turkeys strongman has been pushing for the growth of state-funded Imam Hatip religious schools and has repeatedly stressed his desire to create a pious generation of Turks.
How do you define a “conservative Turk”? Doubt they have much in common at their core with American conservatives.
They are muslims in the way too many young Christians here are “Christian”.
Except in their case, it’s a good thing.
Would hate to have to slaughter millions of Iranians as it seems the young and even under 40 crowd doesn’t want this leadership.
If push comes to shove and we must in the end, then we must.
I’d rather supply them with arms and let them fight.
Obama was in the best position at the best time. And he did nothing.
And when the Brave New World fails them on some account a certain percentage will revert to Jihad.
I would be more interested in learning how many muslims here in the USA or worldwide that want to go to spring break especially the girls.
But per usual part of the political theatre is never asking inconvienient questions to the narrative.
Admit it... Rod Stewart just hit your ear.
Do we include Cenk Uygur among this number of “young Turks”? He seems to be much enamored with just generally kicking apart the current legal and economic system now in wide use in the United States.
Which is sort of odd, because he was a fervent Reagan supporter, and stayed with the Bush Family until the invasion of Iraq. He has since transitioned into a very progressive Democrat Socialist, supporting Bernie Sanders.
Occasionally, for comic relief, I sometimes watch Cenk’s meltdown on Election Night 2016. It was great. YouTube has several versions of it. He started out being smug and overconfident. As the evening went along, its arrogance disappeared right before our eyes. I give him credit for being the first Democrat on TV that night to admit Hillary had lost the election, and squarely blamed the DNC for putting forward such a disastrous candidate.
Most western-educated/oriented Muslims I have met don’t actually want to practice being a Muslim. However they want to be thought of by other Muslims as being a “Good Muslim”! A lot of potentially dangerous baggage comes with that conundrum.
At some point they may have to make their final decision.
Conservative turk = believing Sunni Muslim, at the most Bektashi, believes in interconnection of Mosque and state, in the Quran, hadiths and Hanafi school of Islamic jurisprudence
in the case of Iran, the problem is that the US supports Saudia. Saudia is seen as the enemy of Iran. If the US somehow managed to convince the Iranian people that it was against the Ayatollahs and not against Iran, then things would be different
Yep. Fewer “conservative Turks” is a good thing. Hopefully there will be an Ataturk revival among the young in Turkey and they will come to realize what they have lost and could have been before Erdogan and his ilk came to power. IMHO the economic stagnation that the Turks experienced by mimicking the Social Democrats ( socialists) of Europe in the 1960’s through the 1980’s resulted in the economic stagnation and misery that gave the Islamists their big opportunity. Ataturk gave them freedom and the potential for modernity but they did not choose wisely in the political and economic arenas.
Agreed.
I’m all in favor with Russia taking Istanbul, changing the name to Constantinople, and restoring the Orthodox faith there. The US should support them to do so.
But that’s just me....
The Brave new world HAS failed them — Turkey has been under severe recession for the past few years. People tolerated Erdogan when he gave them growth. But now, thanks to Trump, those days are over
Natch.
If the USA pledges to keep a buffer zone of Belarus-Ukraine, then Russia is not worried. Then let then hav ethe straits of Marmara
If you have ever spent time in Islamic countries and gotten to know a few Muslims. You then look at the experience very dispassionately you quickly realize its an extremely hypocritical culture. Its a life of constant cognitive dissonance. That has to effective the educated western-oriented Muslim. I am not talking about the barbarian on the street they’re cannon fodder to their society & culture.
