Some rushed to their trusted online dealers and stores to stock up on semiautomatic assault-style rifles. Others unlocked their secure cabinets, picked up their firearms and turned them in to police stations, no questions asked.
The estimated quarter of a million gun owners across this largely quiet, peaceful South Pacific country, many of them dedicated hunters, are bracing for what are likely to be significant changes to New Zealands firearm laws. Leaders have hinted that the changes will impact the proliferation and availability of semiautomatic weapons in particular.
The changes, agreed to in principle by the countrys coalition government Monday just 72 hours after the deadliest act of gun violence in New Zealand history put the country in line with others that have taken swift action following tragedy within their borders. Details of the changes will be announced within the week and must be passed by Parliament.

What change in their laws would prevent a future incident of mass homicide?
New Zealand’s electoral system is screwed up , the seats you get depends on the percent of the vote your get . Will the Prime Minister take away all cars the next time someone is killed by a drunk driver ?
NZ uses a combination of parliamentary districts and as you mentioned proportional representation.
If parliament can alter it, it is NO Constitution. It is NO Bill of Rights. It is just another loser STATUTE.
Don't overlook where it's coming from.

I call this for what it is: A Bullsh!t, Fake news Story. Where is the picture or photo of said guns being turned in. Total BS.
Thank God for the patriots who insisted that our bill of rights be in the Constitution.
Well, right?
If a person is driving by raging hatreds to commit a mass murder, he is going to find a way to do it.
He’ll obtain a gun illegally. Or he’ll build a homemade bomb. Or he’ll plow a truck through the front door at 90 MPH. Or he’ll poison their food or water. Or something.
It’s the murderous rage that’s the issue, not the choice of weapon.
“Leaders have hinted that the changes will impact the proliferation and availability of semiautomatic weapons in particular.”
Seems they already live under a tyranny, with “leaders” deciding what their laws will be, instead of representatives bending to the will of the people.
Here is what he wrote:
Why did you choose to use firearms?
I could have chosen any weapons or means.A TATP filled rental van. Household flour, a method of dispersion and an ignition source.A ballpeen hammer and a wooden shield.Gas,fire, vehicular attacks, plane attacks, any means were available. I had the will and I had the resources.
I chose firearms for the affect it would have on social discourse, the extra media coverage they would provide and the affect it could have on the politics of United states and thereby the political situation of the world.
The US is torn into many factions by its second amendment, along state, social, cultural and, most importantly, racial lines.
With enough pressure the left wing within the United states will seek to abolish the second amendment, and the right wing within the US will see this as an attack on their very freedom and liberty.
This attempted abolishment of rights by the left will result in a dramatic polarization of the people in the United States and eventually a fracturing of the US along cultural and racial lines.
In the US our right to conceal is not a right at all. It’s a privilege.
Anything you need to get registration or licencing for is not a right. When you register something it becomes the property of the Regis upon their demand. You can have it, but they own it. Registered property is theirs for the taking.
This is why Civil Forfeiture is such a big topic right now. It applies to registration.
