Authorities take down once-bustling Uighur neighborhoods to create a compliant economic hub

URUMQI, China—In this old Silk Road city in western China, a state security campaign involving the detention of vast numbers of people has moved to its next stage: demolishing their neighborhoods and purging their culture.

Supplanting the Turkic culture that long defined large parts of Urumqi is a sanitized version catering to Chinese tourists. On a recent morning in the Erdaoqiao neighborhood, the once-bustling heart of Uighur Urumqi, nang ovens were nowhere to be seen—but souvenir shops sold nang-shaped pocket mirrors, nang bottle openers and circular throw pillows with covers printed to look like nang.

Urumqi’s transformation is the leading edge of a campaign by China’s ruling Communist Party to forcibly assimilate the Uighurs. Beijing says the detentions combat terrorism and the demolition, along with billions of dollars of investment in the region, is bringing development.

Amazing how the Chinese and Japanese can handle and/or avoid troublesome minorities while Western countries get the shaft. Of course, in Western countries one of the major political parties is always based on catering to intransigent minorities.

Say what you want about an authoritative Chinese Regime.

But you must admit - they will never be overcome from enemies inside their borders.

5700 plus years of a homogenous culture amounts to something.

Not a wise move. China wants to have influence in the African Muslim world. You at least have to pretend at home to get along with them. They will smile at your face and shoot you in the back.

More accurate translation is "Center Kingdom" or "Central Kingdom."

What was the center (capitol) of the Center Kingdom? Peking is off to the North East of China. So is Washington DC for America..

But China is right there.

And it can easily send waves of millions of men in armies to fight if it has to.

In fact I think The Bible predicts something exactly like that.

There has never been a time in history where millions could be sent like that, has there?

China is much bigger today than it was in ancient times.

The capital of China has changed several times. It has grown by — merger and war — to the west and south, most recently by forced "integration" of Tibet as a province.

You can read about it here: History of China.

Sending millions is possible but they couldn’t even keep a decent logistics train going in a war next door to them (Korea). You cannot maintain that type of army that far away, especially a country that is not traditionally a navy power.

China doesn’t want to start a war with Islam.
