All military-style semi-automatic weapons, assault rifles and high-capacity magazines will be banned in New Zealand following the mass shootings at two Christchurch mosques that killed 50 people, New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced on Thursday.
"On 15 March our history changed forever. Now our laws will too. We are announcing action today on behalf of all New Zealanders to strengthen our gun laws and make our country a safer place," Ardern said at a press conference in the capital Wellington.

That’s what I was wondering. Do they have some sort of legislative body, or do they just elect a dictator every few years and hope for benevolence?

What are they going door to door to confiscate? Like to see them try this in the US.
NZ has a 120-member House of Representatives, that presumably debates and enacts laws, when they take a break from reciting the Koran. 49 of the members are not elected, but “chosen from party lists”. The five parties that divide the pie apparently emphasize various aspects of Statism and the left. Does this Muslim-headscarf PM have such control that she just dictates what shall be? This woman acts like Saddam Hussein or Nikolae Ceausescu.
I can see being able to take a snapshot of the neural synapses as they exist and store the structure on a storage device.
I would think the problem lies with “how did that structure emerge in the first place?”. For example, it might be able to recognize a person already known but what about introducing a new person never met? New memories would need to be created, the ability to generate new contexts and associate new information would also need to be understood and simulated. Otherwise, I could introduce a new person and ten seconds later the question “who are you? what is your name again?” would be asked.
How we connect information on such a complex scale, along with how we apply it and generate new contexts would be beyond just storing a snapshot of the brain structure.

I hate the “why do you need” argument. I always respond “why do you need anything? All you really need is what they give you in prison, and you probably don’t need all that”. Ask them why do gays need to have anal sex. Billions of people get along just fine without it, and all it does is spread disease. Why do you need... What a stupid argument.
