I think we lost the republic with Marbury v Madison in 1803. Justice John Marshall decided that the Supreme Court could decide what was and what was not a law. Black robed tyranny started early.

IMO, it was right off the bat: The Whiskey Rebellion.
Revolution starts over taxation of a luxury item (tea), but Heaven forbid, you get the FULL force of (that NEW) govt crashing down should one make any $$ off/any way for those farmers/etc. trying to get what they could outta their crops.
