A rational gun safety bill is moving forward in the Arizona legislature. The bill would repeal the requirement for armed Arizonans to unload, then reload, their firearms every time they drive onto school grounds to pick up their child. From tucson.com:
He pointed out that existing law already permits adults — anyone 18 and older — to drive onto public school campuses with a gun in the vehicle. And if the person leaves the vehicle, the firearm has to be stored out of sight and the vehicle must be locked.
The only difference, Farnsworth said, is that current law requires that the gun be unloaded before reaching the school, a requirement HB 2693 would eliminate.
As legislatures across the country move to repeal infringements on the Second Amendment rights to keep and bear arms, the process is messy and intermittent. Arizona restored Constitutional Carry in 2010. As with most such bills, compromises were made to repeal 98% of the restrictions.
The Supreme Court decision in U.S. v. Heller defined “schools” as “sensitive areas” where arms could be regulated. This unfortunate inclusion, attributed to former Justice Kennedy, gave force to arguments to keep some infringements in place. The requirement that guns in vehicles on school parking lots, driveways, and other areas, under the control of an adult, had to be unloaded, was not repealed.

Man, that just breaks my heart.
I doubt the bill requires you to reload a gun.
I came to this thread expecting to read that the “common sense gun sarety law” was going to be another semi-auto ban.
I was shocked and pleased that it truly was a common sense gun safety measure. The less manipulation of a weapon, especially in a vehicle, the better.
All such named laws enact rules that result in exactly the opposite of their SUPPOSED intention. Generally, this is not the result of unintended consequences. It’s the result of deception.
Examples:
Fair tax laws.
Gun safety laws.
Common sense laws of any kind. (Who has a near-monopoly on common sense? Why, politicians, of course.)

Agree. People screwing around, dropping the mag and clearing the chamber on a semi or dumping rounds out of a revolver cylinder then reversing process to reload is about as dumb as it gets.
People seem to be misreading this. The existing law says you have to unload the gun. HB 2693 would let you keep the gun loaded, though you still have to keep it locked in your car.
Yes, a good change to the existing law.
Guns laws mean nothing but the intent to infringe upon the 2nd amendment.
Anti gun laws are as useless as the laws against drugs.
If laws could cure a problem then we would not have drugs in this country.
When is a accident most likely to happen...While the gun is holstered, or when loading/unloading?
When I went to high school, I can remember during hunting season that many of the boys had guns on the racks inside their trucks & they were loaded.
NO ONE ever bothered any of us over this.
Which is why HB 2693 must be passed...

It is past time for America to pass “Common Sense socialism Control”. We definitely need to get out-of-control socialism out of our schools.
It’s about Arizona getting rid of bad law.
