Petroleum contains a huge amount of stored energy. There is nothing else like it. It’s free for the taking. You pay just the cost for recovery, refining and distribution, plus taxes. It’s still cheaper than solar or wind power.
There is not enough room for solar collectors or windmills that would replace the power obtained from petroleum.

Nope. The entire US energy usage (ALL forms, not just electricity) can be supplied by an area of solar cells 100 x 100 miles, which is an unnoticeable dot on the land area of the US. The problems are elsewhere (transmission and storage).
